VERY CLOSE TO V1; A B737 IS ASKED BY THE LCL CTLR TO ABORT ON RWY 7L AT LAS IF HE CAN. AN APPARENT XING OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE AT A6 BY A B757 WAS THE REASON FOR THE CALL. TKOF WAS CONTINUED.

Narrative

DEPARTING RWY 7L AT LAS FROM INTXN A8; WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. PRIOR TO COMMENCING THE TKOF ROLL; WE SAW ANOTHER ACRS B757 APCHING RWY 7L AT INTXN A6 AHEAD OF US WHERE IT WAS TO HOLD SHORT. IT LOOKED LIKE IT MIGHT NOT HOLD SHORT; SO WE HELD UNTIL SEEING THE B757 STOP. FEELING SECURE THAT THE B757 WAS STOPPED AND CLR OF THE RWY; I BEGAN THE TKOF. AT A SPD OF AROUND 100 KTS; THE TWR SAID 'COMPANY; ABORT THE TKOF IF YOU CAN.' WE WERE WITHIN 10 KTS OF OUR V1 SPD AND I SAW NO SAFETY OF FLT ISSUES AND CONTINUED THE TKOF. THE ONLY REASON I COULD THINK THAT WE WERE ASKED TO ABORT WAS BECAUSE THE B757 HAD GONE BEYOND THE HOLD POINT FOR RWY 7L. THE B757 HAD NOT ADVISED THIS AND THE TWR HAD NOT ADVISED US OF THAT. WE CONTINUED UNEVENTFULLY TO DEST. I CALLED THE TWR TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE REASON FOR THE ABORT CALL. THEY INDICATED EVERYTHING WAS ALRIGHT UNLESS WE WANTED TO PURSUE IT. I INDICATED THAT WE DID NOT. AT THAT POINT IN THE TKOF; HAD WE ABORTED WE WOULD HAVE HAD A HIGH SPD ABORT AND GONE THROUGH THE INTXN THAT WAS IN QUESTION. IN MY OPINION WE WERE COMPLETELY SAFE AT ALL TIMES. WE HAD PLENTY OF CLRNC TO MAKE THAT TKOF OR I WOULD NOT HAVE COMMENCED IT. I DO QUESTION THE USE OF XING THE ACTIVE TO TAXI FOR TKOF WHEN ANOTHER RTE TO THE RWY WAS AVAILABLE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 610557: CAPT'S LEG. LAS TWR GAVE US 'POS AND HOLD RWY 7L AT INTXN A8.' ANOTHER CARRIER B757 AT A6 OR A5 SBND WAS TOLD TO 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 7L.' WE WERE 'CLRED FOR TKOF;' BUT HESITATED UNTIL THE B757 STOPPED; WHICH IT DID SEEMINGLY WELL SHORT OF RWY 7L. AS WE WERE ACCELERATING BTWN THE '80 KTS' CALL AND V1; LAS TWR SAID; 'COMPANY NUMBER; ABORT YOUR TKOF; IF YOU CAN SAFELY.' (PHRASEOLOGY AS ACCURATE AS I CAN RECALL.) BY THIS TIME WE WERE CLOSE TO V1 AND THERE WAS NO THREAT IN FRONT OF US; SO WE ELECTED TO CONTINUE THE TKOF IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY. THE B757 DID NOT SEEM TO 'LOOM' INTO OUR TKOF SAFETY MARGIN; NOR DID A HIGH SPD ABORT SEEM LIKE A SAFER OPTION. THE REMAINDER OF THE TKOF AND FLT WAS NORMAL.
