NMAC BTWN A TRAINING C172 AND A C150 ON SHORT FINAL AT MMV; OR.

Narrative

THE SIT RESULTED IN ANOTHER ACFT COMING WITHIN 200-300 FT OF MINE. I WAS ACTING AS PIC OF A C172 ON AN INST TRAINING FLT. WE WERE ON AN IFR FLT PLAN; HAD FINISHED FLYING AN NDB APCH TO A MISSED APCH AT MMV AND WERE BEGINNING AN ILS TO MMV. WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR THE APCH AND TOLD TO RPT MINNE INTXN INBOUND. WHEN WE DID SO; APCH CTL APPROVED A CHANGE TO ADVISORY FREQ AND TOLD US TO RPT BACK TO THEM ON THE MISSED. ON THE PREVIOUS NDB APCH; WE HAD NOT HEARD OR SEEN ANY OTHER TFC AT MMV. ONCE WE HAD CHANGED FREQS; I TOLD THE STUDENT THAT I HAD THE RADIOS AND MADE AN INITIAL CALL 'MCMINNVILLE TFC; CESSNA X IS ON A 4 MI FINAL TO RWY 22 ON AN INST APCH TO A LOW PASS ONLY; MCMINNVILLE.' I HEARD NO OTHER TFC RPT. AT 3 MI OUT; I MADE ANOTHER CALL. I SUBSEQUENTLY HEARD 2 CONSECUTIVE ACFT GIVE POS RPTS. THE FIRST WAS ON BASE TURNING TO FINAL AND THE SECOND WAS UPWIND TURNING XWIND. I WAS ABLE TO FIND THEM BOTH AND NEITHER OF THEM WERE A CONFLICT. AT 2 MI OUT; I MADE ANOTHER CALL. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT CALL; A FOURTH ACFT MADE A CALL 'WHAT ABOUT ME?' I BEGAN TO LOOK FOR AN ADDITIONAL ACFT. THE ACFT THAT HAD RPTED BASE TURNING FINAL; LANDED AND CLRED THE RWY. AT 1 MI OUT; I MADE ANOTHER CALL. FOLLOWING THIS CALL; I HEARD A CALL 'ACFT X; ARE YOU GOING TO RUN INTO ME?' AT THIS POINT; I HAD THE STUDENT LEVEL OFF AT 700 FT AND FOCUSED MY ENTIRE ATTN TO SCANNING FOR THE TFC AND WAS FINALLY ABLE TO DETECT THE OTHER ACFT AT OUR 10 O'CLOCK POS AT APPROX THE SAME ALT AS US ON A L BASE LEG. I MADE A CALL 'I HAVE YOU IN SIGHT NOW.' HE MADE A RETURN CALL 'I'M COMFORTED.' HIS CALL SEEMED TO BE IN A SARCASTIC TONE. SIMULTANEOUS TO HIS RADIO CALL; HIS ACFT TURNED L TO A STRAIGHT LINE DOGLEG FINAL TO THE RWY. AT THIS POINT; HE HAD MOVED TO OUR 9 O'CLOCK POS. WHEN WE WERE AT 1/2 MI OUT; HE DROPPED TO OUR 8 O'CLOCK POS AND DSNDED. AT THAT POINT; HE TURNED R BACK TO BASE AND THEN L ONTO A STRAIGHT-IN FINAL BEHIND US. AT THIS POINT; I LOST SIGHT OF HIM. WE REACHED OUR MISSED APCH POINT; EXECUTED AND RPTED THE MISSED ON MCMINNVILLE TFC. HE THEN MADE A RADIO CALL 'ACFT X WAS IT? I THINK I'LL GIVE MR X A PHONE CALL ABOUT YOU.' I SWITCHED BACK TO PORTLAND DEP TO RPT THE MISSED APCH TO THEM AS INSTRUCTED. WE CONTINUED THE FLT WITH A FINAL APCH INTO HILLSBORO TO A FULL STOP. AT NO POINT WHILE WE WERE ON ADVISORY FREQ DID THE CONFLICTING ACFT; WHICH APPEARED TO BE A C150; GIVE A POS RPT OR IDENT HIS TAIL NUMBER. FOR CLARITY; MR X IS THE NAME OF THE OWNER FOR WHICH I AM EMPLOYED.
