Synopsis

AN MD80 CAPT EXPRESSED DISSATISFACTION WITH HIS FO AFTER THEY OVERSHOT THE RWY AT DFW DURING A VISUAL APCH.

Narrative

I'M THE CAPT AND I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY. THEY CHANGED RWYS FROM RWY 17L TO RWY 17C AND CLRED DIRECT JIFFY NDB. IT WAS ALREADY SET RAW DATA. THE FO STARTED MESSING WITH THE FMS TO CHANGE RWYS. I SAID FOLLOW THE NDB. HE CONTINUED TO MESS AROUND WITH THE BOX. HE SAID HE HAD THE ARPT VISUALLY. I SAID; 'I HAVE THE ARPT BUT NOT THE RWY.' HE SAID HE HAD IT AND WE WERE ASKED IF WE WANTED A VISUAL. HE LED ME TO BELIEVE HE HAD THE RWY SO I ACCEPTED THE VISUAL. I LOOKED OVER AND SAW HE WAS STILL IN MISSED APCH MODE. I LOOKED UP AND SAID I HAD FULL SCALE DEFLECTION ON MY LOC AND TOLD THE FO. I LOOKED AT THE ARPT AND SAW WE WERE PAST THE TERMINALS AND IMMEDIATELY GOT ON THE RADIO; TOLD TWR WE WERE CORRECTING. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO OTHER AIRPLANES IN OUR PATH. THE WK BEFORE; THE FO BLEW THROUGH THE FINAL AT ORD AFTER REPEATED WARNINGS TO SLOW DOWN AND GET STABILIZED. THIS WAS ALSO PRECIPITATED BY TOO MUCH RELIANCE AND FIXATION ON THE BOX. THIS IS MY FAULT AND HOPEFULLY IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. WHEN I TALK TO THESE GUYS ABOUT HOW WE COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS; OR PREVENT IT IN THE FUTURE; THEY ARE VERY DEFENSIVE AND ACT AS IF IT WAS OKAY. IT WASN'T. I GUESS I HAVE TO THROW THE MISTER NICE GUY STUFF IN THE TOILET AND TELL THEM THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM; IT'S JUST CRITICISM.
