A LNDG A300 CARGO FLT; AFTER A LONG ROLLOUT ON RWY 12R; TURNS ONTO THE XING RWY 3 AT THE END OF RWY 12R AND RAISES THE IRE OF THE LCL CTLR AT SAT; TX.
DUE TO RPTED XWIND; CHOSE TO LAND AT FLAPS 20 DEG SETTING. APCH SPD WAS APPROX 145 KTS. LNDG AT SAT RWY 12R; DID NOT SLOW DOWN TO TAXI SPD UNTIL APCHING TXWY N. RWY 12R DEAD-ENDS INTO RWY 3 AT SAT. TXWY D ALSO CROSSES TXWY N. WE HAD COME INTO SAT VERY OFTEN AND HAD ALWAYS LANDED ON RWY 12R; ROLLED OUT TO THE END; L TURN ON RWY 3 TO PARKING. THIS MORNING WE PASSED TXWY N WHICH IS VERY CLOSE TO RWY 3 AND TURNED ON RWY 3. THE CTLR RATHER SARCASTICALLY REMARKED 'WELL; I GUESS YOU CAN TAXI TO PARKING ON AN ACTIVE RWY.' WE HAD NEVER RECEIVED ANY INSTRUCTIONS TO THAT POINT. THE CTLR WAS BUSY PUTTING A DEP INTO POS SO WE TOOK ABOUT AN EXTRA 10-15 SECONDS CLRING ON RWY 3 INSTEAD OF TXWY N. NORMALLY WE HURRY; ASK TO DO THAT; BUT THIS TIME WE DID IT BEFORE WE HAD A CHANCE TO ASK. WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO LAHSO AT SAT; SO WHEN WE GET A CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 12R IT IS FOR FULL LENGTH. IF YOU USE FULL LENGTH; YOU HAVE NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO TAXI CLR USING RWY 3. I THINK THE CTLR WAS IRRITATED BECAUSE HE HAD A DEP; BUT IF HE WANTED 'MINIMUM TIME' ON THE RWY OR HAD SAID 'CLR AT TXWY N' WE CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE. FROM NOW ON WE WILL ALWAYS ASK EVEN WHEN WE KNOW ALL THE RWY IS OURS.
