AN A319 CAPT RPTED THAT A MULTITUDE OF DISTRS CAUSED HIM TO ASK FOR FULL FLAPS BEFORE HE VERIFIED GEAR DOWN INDICATION DURING AN APCH TO LAX.

Narrative

EXTREMELY BUSY ATC ENVIRONMENT; WATCHING FOR TFC ABEAM HHR; OVERTAKING TFC RWY 24R; FOLLOWING TURBOPROP 2.5 MI AHEAD; WIND 230 DEGS AT 9 KTS; VISIBILITY 6 MI IN HAZE. ASKED FOR GEAR DOWN DURING ATC XMISSION; FOLLOWED BY REQUEST FOR FULL FLAPS. FO HEARD FULL FLAPS AND SELECTED FULL FLAPS. HE AND I BOTH WERE BUSY TRYING TO LOCATE THE ARPT/RWY AND TFC WE WERE FOLLOWING. SOME DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW ARPT ENVIRONMENT DISAPPEARED IN HAZE AND THEN BACK TO VIEW. WHEN FLAPS REACHED FULL; RECEIVED ECAM LNDG 'GEAR NOT DOWN' WITH CRC. INITIALLY LEVELED OFF THEN BEGAN SLIGHT CLB TO REMAIN ABOVE 1000 FT AGL. GEAR WAS SIMULTANEOUSLY SELECTED DOWN WITH ECAM AND; ONCE DOWN AND LOCKED; PROCEEDED WITH VISUAL APCH. PROBABLY COMPOUNDED BY INADEQUACY OF CREW MEAL OUT OF ORD; WHICH HAD BEEN PREVALENT FOR PAST 6 WKS; IE; PASTA WITH TOMATO SAUCE AND GREEN BEANS; SIDE SALAD AND HIGH FRUCTOSE/SUCROSE DESSERT (LACKING ANY PROTEIN AT ALL). THIS LENDING TO A SPIKE IN BLOOD SUGAR; FOLLOWED BY HYPOGLYCEMIA; WITH BOTH OF US COMPLAINING OF TIREDNESS AND FATIGUE; FINISHING UP MONTH WITH 95.32 HRS PAY; 92+ HARD TIME; AND END OF 5 DAY RESERVE PERIOD; CONTINUOUS IDENT. AT NO TIME WAS ACFT OR PAX OR FARS IN VIOLATION OR DANGER. SOP COMPLIANCE OF HAVING GEAR DOWN PRIOR TO FULL FLAPS WAS INCIDENT. NORMAL REMAINDER OF APCH AND LNDG/ROLLOUT WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT DEV FROM ILS GS.
