Synopsis

BE36 PLT ENCOUNTERED WAKE TURB FROM A DEPARTING B737. THE BE36 MADE CONTACT WITH THE RWY; WITH THE LNDG GEAR IN TRANSIT.

Narrative

ACR B737 WAS CLRED FOR DEP ON RWY 33. THE WIND WAS 060 DEGS AT 5 KTS. VIRTUALLY AFTER THE BEGINNING OF THE TKOF ROLE OF THE B737; I WAS CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD. FOLLOWING THAT I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. ON THE TKOF ROLL THE INSTS INDICATED FULL PWR AND INCREASING AIRSPD. I ROTATED AT 70 KTS AT A POINT WELL BEFORE THE LIFTOFF POINT OF THE B737. I RAISED THE GEAR; NOTED SIMULTANEOUS TURB AND AN UNCOMMANDED EXTREME ROLL TO THE L. THIS WAS CORRECTED WITH FULL R AILERON TO NEUTRAL. AT THIS POINT A LOSS OF LIFT BECAME APPARENT DESPITE FULL PWR. A COMBINATION OF CONTINUED TURB AND LOSS OF LIFT PROMPTED ME TO ACTUATE THE GEAR DOWN CTL. THIS WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY IMPACT. IN RETROSPECT; IF THE TWR HAD DELAYED TKOF CLRNC OR IF I HAD INSISTED ON A LONGER SEPARATION TIME; THIS INCIDENT; LIKELY CAUSED BY WAKE TURB; COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT AN FSDO SUPVR HAS ON GOING INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT. HE HAS INTERVIEWED THE PLT; AND HAD A COPY OF THE ATC TAPES. IT SHOWED 20-23 SECONDS BTWN THE DEPARTING B737 AND THE BE36 DEP. IT SHOWS NO FAR VIOLATIONS. THE ACFT WAS EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED WHEN IT STRUCK THE RWY; WITH THE GEAR NOT DOWN AND LOCKED.
