Synopsis

DURING CLBOUT FOLLOWING ALL 4 ENG CHANGES; A B747-200 EXPERIENCED AN OVERHEAT. THE CREW COMPLETED AN ENG SHUTDOWN; EMER DECLARED; AND RETURN LAND.

Narrative

THIS WAS A SCHEDULED REPOSITION FLT AFTER A 4 ENG CHANGE. I WAS THE SO/FE DURING THIS EVENT. DURING CLBOUT; PASSING APPROX 4000 FT MSL; I NOTICED THE ENG #4 NACELLE TEMP BEGIN TO RISE TOWARD THE FIRE RANGE. ONCE THE NACELLE TEMP ON BOTH FIRE LOOPS REACHED THE FIRE RANGE; THE ENG #4 FIRE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND MASTER FIRE WARNING BELL SOUNDED. WE REQUESTED A LEVELOFF ALT OF 9000 FT; AND RPTED TO ATC; AND TO OUR COMPANY; THAT WE HAD AN ENG INDICATION WE NEEDED TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE. ATC CLRED US TO HOLD WITH 20 MI LEGS AT 240 KTS (MINIMUM FLAP SPD). AFTER THRUST WAS RETARDED FOR LEVELOFF; THE FIRE WARNING LIGHT WENT OUT; AS THE NACELLE TEMP STARTED RETURNING TOWARD THE NORMAL RANGE. THE CAPT AND I ACCOMPLISHED THE ABNORMAL PROC; AND SHUT THE #4 ENG DOWN. AFTER COMPLETION OF THE ABNORMAL PROC; THE CAPT DECLARED AN EMER TO ATC AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO LAND BACK AT ZZZ1. THE CAPT MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG; BELOW MAX LNDG WT. AFTER CLRING THE RWY; EMER CREWS VISUALLY INSPECTED THE #4 ENG; WITH NO SIGNS OF FIRE OR DAMAGE. TAXIED TO THE MAINT HANGAR AND TURNED THE ACFT OVER TO MAINT.
