Synopsis

AN M20G NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED AFTER THE ACFT PORPOISED ON LNDG IN GUSTY WINDS.

Narrative

THIS RPT IS IN REGARDS TO MY LNDG INCIDENT AT ZZZ1 ON APR/SAT/05. WX BRIEFINGS WERE OBTAINED THE NIGHT BEFORE THE FLT AS WELL AS PRIOR TO DEP FROM ZZZ. WHILE ENRTE TO ZZZ3; I MADE AN INTERIM STOP AT ZZZ1. STRONG GUSTY SURFACE WINDS FROM THE NE WERE FORECAST ALONG MY RTE. AWOS AT ZZZ1 CONFIRMED NE WINDS GUSTING TO 27 KTS. I WAS CLRED BY THE TWR TO LAND ON RWY 5. THE ACFT BOUNCED AND BEGAN TO PORPOISE. THE NOSEWHEEL COLLAPSED AND THE ACFT CAME TO REST. AFTER SHUTTING OFF FUEL AND IGNITION; I EXITED THE ACFT. I CONTACTED THE TWR ON A HANDHELD XCEIVER. ARPT PERSONNEL WERE QUICKLY ON THE SCENE. THE NTSB AND FAA WERE CALLED WITH HELP LOCATING NUMBERS FROM FSS. THE ACFT WAS REMOVED FROM THE RWY AFTER PERMISSION FROM THE NTSB. INSPECTION OF THE FIREWALL WAS INTACT. I WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE ACFT AND SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. I CHOSE ZZZ1 TO LAND BECAUSE THE WINDS WERE DOWN THE RWY. I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THE FORECAST AND THE WINDS PRIOR TO LNDG. I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT BOUNCE OR PORPOISING BEFORE. I HAVE LANDED IN THESE TYPES OF WINDS BEFORE. MY REACTION TO THE BOUNCE AND SUBSEQUENT PORPOISING WAS TOO SLOW. IT WAS ALL OVER IN 4-5 SECONDS. IN ORDER TO NOT HAVE THIS HAPPEN AGAIN; I NEED TO ANTICIPATE THE POSSIBILITY BEFORE IT HAPPENS SO THAT I AM IN A POS TO REACT QUICKLY WITH PWR -- MUCH LIKE A MULTI-ENG PLT PREPARES HIMSELF FOR AN ENG LOSS PRIOR TO TKOF. I THINK I LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS.
