PARKING VIA THE AGNIS (AZIMUTH GUIDANCE FOR NOSE IN STANDS) USING A SEPARATE PAPA (PARALLAX AIRPLANE PARKING AID) STOPPING GUIDANCE DEVICE; B777 STRIKES JETWAY WITH L ENG WHEN CAPT'S ATTN IS DIRECTED TO AZIMUTH VICE STOPPING DEVICE.
UPON ARR IN THE GATE AREA; I CONFIRMED BRAKE PRESSURE; CLRED THE AREA; AND CONFIRMED ILLUMINATION OF THE AGNIS (AZIMUTH GUIDANCE FOR NOSE IN STAND) LIGHT SYS. THE CAPT TAXIED THE ACFT INTO THE GATE AREA AT A SLOW SPD. THE FIRST INDICATION THAT SOMETHING WAS ABNORMAL WAS A SLIGHT 'SHUDDER' OF THE ACFT. THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT. WE THEN NOTICED A 'STOP' LIGHT FLASHING NEAR THE AGNIS LIGHT SYS. THE GND CREW INFORMED US VIA INTERPHONE THAT THE L ENG HAD CONTACTED THE JETWAY. WE SHUT DOWN THE R ENG; AND THE PAX EXITED VIA DOOR 1R AND PORTABLE STAIRS. I FEEL THAT THERE WERE 3 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS EVENT: 1) THE AGNIS LIGHTING SYS AND PAPA (PARALLAX AIRPLANE PARKING AID) STOP BAR SYS ARE NOT CO-LOCATED AT LGW; CAUSING THE CAPT TO DIVIDE HIS ATTN BTWN THE TWO. 2) THE PAPA STOP BAR SYS IS ONLY ON THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT. DUE TO PARALLAX ERROR; THE FO IS UNABLE TO BACK UP THE CAPT ON WHEN TO STOP THE ACFT. 3) THE 'STOP' LIGHT NEXT TO THE AGNIS LIGHTING SYS IS NOT MANNED CONTINUOUSLY DURING ACFT ARR AT THE GATE.
