Synopsis

B737-400 WAS DISPATCHED WITH THE INCORRECT RADOME INSTALLED.

Narrative

ON THE NIGHT IN QUESTION; I WAS INFORMED BY THE LEAD THAT ACFT X RECEIVED A BIRD STRIKE ON THE NOSE RADOME. I WAS ASSIGNED TO WORK A DIFFERENT ACFT; BUT WAS LATER REASSIGNED TO HELP WITH THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE RADOME. I WAS TOLD ACFT ON GND HAD LOCATED A PART AT ANOTHER ACR AND THE LEADS WENT TO PICK IT UP. WHEN THE TRUCK ARRIVED WITH THE PART; I WAS TOLD IT WAS A CROSSREFERENCED PART NUMBER; SINCE THE TAG HAD A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF 3 MECHS AND A LEAD; I INSTALLED THE RADOME PER THE APPLICABLE MAINT MANUAL. WHEN THE JOB WAS COMPLETED; I FILLED OUT THE LOG PAGE AND ENTERED THE PART NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER IN MY CORRECTIVE ACTION. DURING THIS MAINT PROC; I SHOULD HAVE DOUBLECHKED ALL PART NUMBERS AND CROSSREFERENCES. I SHOULD ALSO HAVE CHKED BEFORE HAND EFFECTIVITY MYSELF. IT WOULD HAVE ALSO HELPED ME IF I ORDERED THE PART MYSELF; AND BE MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE IPC; EFFECTIVITY; AND PART ORDERING PROCS. I RELY ON A LOT OF TEAMWORK; COMING FROM THE ACFT ON GND DESK; TO THE LEADS; THEN TO ME AND MY CO-WORKERS. THE PART WAS RESEARCHED; CALLED IN THE ACFT ON GND; ORDERED; DELIVERED TO THE ACFT. I DID NOT VERIFY THAT THE PART WAS THE ONE ORDERED. THE NEXT TIME; I WILL BE MORE CAREFUL IN MAKING SURE THE PART INSTALLED IS THE CORRECT EFFECTIVITY. I THINK WHAT ELSE CONTRIBUTED TO MY MISTAKE WAS I WAS ASSIGNED A DIFFERENT ACFT AND THEN BROKE OFF TO HELP WITH THE RADOME SO I WAS NOT INVOLVED WITH THE PART NUMBER RESEARCH PROCESS FROM THE BEGINNING. THEN; WHEN WE WERE SENT THE WRONG RADOME ORDERED; I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THAT DISCREPANCY.
