A B747-200 WAS DISPATCHED WITH THE INCORRECT #1 HORIZ SIT INDICATOR INSTALLED. TECHNICIANS INSTALLING THE PART WERE ASSURED OF CORRECT PART NUMBER AFTER CHKING WITH CARRIER AND TECHNICIAN'S LOGISTICS CTR.
ON DEC/FRI/05 AT XA00 I WAS ASSIGNED TO WORK AT ACR X WHO HAS A CONTRACT WITH OUR COMPANY FOR MAINT WORK. AT XA30 THE ACFT ARRIVED IN ZZZ AND I WAS TOLD BY THE FLT CREW THAT THEY HAD A COMPASS PROB. MY PARTNER WENT TO THE FLT DECK AND CHKED THE LOGBOOK AND IT SAID #2 HSI HAD A HDG FLAG STUCK. I THEN INFORMED ACR X MAINT OF THE ACFT'S SIT. THEY (CTL) SENT SOME TROUBLESHOOTING INFO AND WE ACCOMPLISHED THE PROC. AT XC15 WE DETERMINED THAT THE #1 HSI WAS FAULTY. I THEN CALLED ACR X MAINT CTL AND TOLD THEM WE NEEDED A #1 HSI. ALSO; I ASKED FOR THE PART NUMBER SO I COULD ALSO TRY AND LOCATE THE PART ALSO. I CALLED MY COMPANY PARTS LOGISTICS CTR AND GAVE THEM THE PART NUMBER ACR X GAVE ME. LOGISTICS CROSSED THE PART NUMBER AND CAME UP WITH A COMPANY PART NUMBER. THEY TOLD ME THE PART WAS IN ZZZ1 AND I WOULD HAVE IT IN ZZZ AT XE15. I THEN CALLED ACR X MAINT CTL AND SAID I HAD FOUND THE PART IN ZZZ1. THEY TOLD ME TO HAVE IT SENT. I CALLED MY COMPANY BACK AND VERIFIED IT WAS ON THE WAY. I THEN CALLED ACR X OPS IN ZZZ AND SAID I FOUND THE PART BUT I NEEDED SOMEONE TO SIGN FOR IT WHEN IT ARRIVED. THEY SAID THAT IT NEEDED TO BE THEIR MAINT MGR; BUT HE WASN'T THERE. THEY SAID SOMEONE FROM THE CARGO DEPT WOULD SIGN FOR IT. AT XE00 I ARRIVED WITH THE ACR X AND MY PARTNER AT COMPANY STORES. I RETRIEVED THE PART AND CHKED THE NUMBER. THE NUMBER DIDN'T MATCH WITH THE NUMBER ACR X MAINT CTL HAD GIVEN ME. I THEN WENT TO OUT COMPUTER AND INPUTTED THE NUMBER ACR X HAD GIVEN ME; AND IT MATCHED THE COMPANY PART NUMBER THAT WAS ON THE TAGGED PART. I ALSO INPUTTED THE PART NUMBER ON THE HSI AND IT MATCHED THE PART THAT WAS ON THE SVCABLE TAG. I ASSUMED SINCE BOTH PART NUMBERS MATCHED; IT COULD BE INSTALLED ON ACR X ACFT. I THEN INSTALLED THE PART AND OPS CHKED PER ACFT MAINT MANUAL. CHK WAS OK. I THEN SENT ACR X A COMPUTER LOGBOOK ENTRY OF WHAT HAD BEEN DONE ALONG WITH THE PART NUMBERS AND THAT BOTH PART NUMBERS MATCHED IN COMPANY COMPUTER SYS. I WAS INFORMED LATER THAT THE ONE PART NUMBER WOULD NOT BE COMPATIBLE WITH ACFT X. NOTE: COMPUTER LOGBOOK ENTRY SENT TO ACR X WAS MADE BEFORE ACFT DEP.
