Synopsis

A B757-200 EXPERIENCED AN ENG FIRE WARNING. THE CREW SHUT DOWN THE ENG; DECLARED AN EMER; AND RETURNED TO LAND WITH THE FIRE WARNING EXTINGUISHED.

Narrative

FLT PUSHED BACK AND BEGAN A TAXI TO RWY. WE STARTED THE L ENG FIRST THEN DID A DELAYED START ON THE R ENG. PRIOR TO THE END OF THE RWY; ALL CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED AND THE CABIN WAS READY FOR TKOF. THE CAPT WAS THE PF AND I WAS THE PLT MONITORING. TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF AND ASSIGNED US A 250 DEG HDG WITH A CLB TO 10000 FT MSL. THE TKOF AND INITIAL CLB WERE NORMAL. TWR TOLD US TO SWITCH TO DEP. THE AFTER TKOF CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED. DEP CTL ASSIGNED US A TURN L TO A HDG OF 190 DEGS. ONCE ESTABLISHED ON THE 190 DEG HDG AND CLBING THROUGH APPROX 8500 FT MSL; THE ENG FIRE WARNING FOR THE L ENG CAME ON. THE CAPT AND I PERFORMED THE MEMORY ITEMS. THE DUTIES WERE THEN SPLIT. THE CAPT CONTINUED TO FLY AND TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATC COMS. I RAN THE QRH PROCS AND COMMUNICATED WITH THE CABIN CREW; PAX; AND FLT CTL. AFTER WE CLOSED THE L THRUST LEVER; THE L ENG NO LONGER INDICATED A FIRE. I ASKED THE LEAD FLT ATTENDANT TO DISCRETELY LOOK AT THE L ENG FOR ANY SIGNS OF AN ABNORMAL CONDITION. WHEN SHE RPTED BACK SHE SAID EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL; HOWEVER; ONE OF THE FLT ATTENDANTS RPTED A SMOKE ODOR. WITH THIS INFO; THE CAPT AND I DECIDED TO CONTINUE WITH THE QRH PROC THAT GUIDES US TO SHUT DOWN THE ENG. ONCE SHUTDOWN WITH THE FIRE HANDLE PULLED; THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATIONS OF A FIRE. AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH A RETURN TO LAND. WE WERE VECTORED FOR AN APCH TO RWY . THE DSCNT AND APCH CHKLIST WERE COMPLETED. THE APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL. THE ACFT WAS STOPPED ON TXWY M. THE FIRE PERSONNEL COMPLETED AN EXTERIOR INSPECTION. THEY RPTED NO EVIDENCE OF AN ENG FIRE. WE THEN PROCEEDED TO THE GATE AND SHUT DOWN.
