Synopsis

PA28 PLT HAS A RWY EXCURSION INTO A SNOW BANK.

Narrative

I FLEW OVER THE ARPT TO SEE THE WINDSOCK TO CHK THE WINDS. THIS ARPT IS UNMANNED. THERE SEEMED TO BE NO WIND AT ALL OR VERY LITTLE. WHEN I TURNED BASE TO FINAL; I PUT IN 2 NOTCHES OF FLAPS AND STARTED MY FINAL FOR LNDG. JUST AS I TOUCHED THE GND; THE FRONT OF THE PLANE WANTED TO TURN TO THE R. AS I TOOK CARE OF THIS; I NOTICED THE END OF THE RWY WAS COMING TO THE END. I JUST ABOUT STOOD ON THE BRAKES TO STOP THE PLANE. THE PLANE SKIDDED OFF THE END OF THE RWY IN THE MUD AND CAME TO REST IN A SNOW BANK. I CHKED THE 3 FAMILY MEMBERS TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE OK. THERE WAS STILL PLENTY OF SUNLIGHT LEFT. I CHKED THE PLANE OVER FOR ANY DAMAGE AND CHKED THE PROP. THE ONLY THING THAT I COULD FIND THAT WAS HURT WAS THE WHEEL PANTS; WHERE THEY WENT THROUGH THE SNOW PILE SOME OF THE PAINT RUBBED OFF. AFTER THE PLANE WAS REMOVED FROM THE SNOW AND BACK ON THE RWY; 2 OTHER PLTS AND I LOOKED THE PLANE OVER FOR DAMAGE. I DID ALL OF MY SAFETY CHKS PRIOR TO TAKING OFF; AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. FOR MY PIECE OF MIND; I TOOK OFF AND CIRCLED THE FIELD UNTIL I CLBED TO 6000 FT AND STARTED THE TRIP BACK HOME. I FLEW FROM ARPT TO ARPT AND KEYED THE RADIO FREQ OF THE NEXT ARPT JUST IN CASE; IF ANYTHING WOULD HAPPEN. I TOOK MY TIME GETTING BACK; MADE IT BACK WITHOUT ANY PROBS.
