Synopsis

B757 FLT CREW LANDS AT DFW WITH A 17 KT TAILWIND.

Narrative

WX AT ZZZ1 WAS CLR. FLT WAS DISPATCHED WITH 24 MINS OF HOLDING FUEL. WX AT ZZZ1 WAS VFR. ARRIVING IN THE ZZZ1 AREA; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD AT WEIR INTXN S OF CEDAR CREEK ON THE CEDAR CREEK 6 ARR DUE TO ARR DELAYS AT ZZZ1. OUR EFC WOULD NOT ALLOW US TO CONTINUE TO THAT EFC TIME; SO I CONTACTED DISPATCH AND GOT INFO TO DIVERT TO ZZZ2 IF NECESSARY WITH THE CONCURRENCE OF THE DISPATCHER. DISPATCH THEN CALLED ATC AND WORKED OUT A PLAN TO PUT OUR ACFT AHEAD OF OTHER ACFT THAT HAD MORE FUEL THAN WE DID AT ZZZ1 WAS STARTING A FLOW FROM CEDAR CREEK INBOUND. ZZZ1 HAD BEEN LNDG TO THE N PREVIOUSLY WITH THE WINDS 240 DEGS AT 15 KTS GUSTING TO 24 KTS. ATIS INFO SHOWED ONLY RWY 31L/R IN USE AT ZZZ1. ZZZ1 WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING THE ARPT AROUND. AFTER SEVERAL TURNS IN HOLDING AND TALKING TO DISPATCH; WE WERE CLRED INBOUND TO ZZZ1. SUBSEQUENT ATIS INFO SHOWED WX IN THE AREA TO BE FEW 060; 10 SM; AND WIND 240 DEGS AT 15 KTS GUSTING TO 24 KTS AND LNDG ON RWYS 13R; 17L; 17C AND 18R. RWY 17C WAS ASSIGNED TO US. THIS APPEARED TO BE AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG INTO THE WIND. HOWEVER; ON FINAL APCH THE WIND WAS RPTED TO BE 300 DEGS AT 27 KTS. WE DISCUSSED THE WIND KNOWING WE HAD A QUARTERING TAILWIND. HOWEVER; WE FELT COMMITTED TO CONTINUE ON THE FINAL APCH AND IF THINGS DID NOT APPEAR NORMAL ENOUGH TO LAND; WE WOULD GO AROUND. OUR PROB WAS LOW FUEL AT THAT TIME AND HAD WE GONE AROUND WE WOULD BE UNAWARE OF ANY DELAYS WE MIGHT ENCOUNTER TO GET US ON THE GND; AS OTHER ACFT WERE DELAYED AND DEALING WITH SIMILAR PROBS. WE LANDED WITH 6600 LBS WITH A RESERVE OF 5400 LBS FOR LNDG. AFTER LNDG ROLLOUT; THE ZZZ1 ARPT DECIDED TO TURN ITSELF AROUND AGAIN TO THE N. SO HAD WE GONE AROUND WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK IN THE DELAY OF THEM TURNING THE ARPT AROUND. I USED MY CAPT'S EMER AUTH TO CONTINUE TO LAND WITH THE TAILWIND WITH THE COPLT'S FULL CONCURRENCE. I DID NOT THINK OF ANOTHER SAFER OPTION AVAILABLE TO US AT THE TIME AND WE LANDED UNEVENTFULLY.
