Synopsis

MISTUNED VOR RECEIVER WHILE TRANSITING LAX CLASS B RESULTS IN CONFUSION AND MULTIPLE ATC ASSISTS FOR C182 PLT.

Narrative

I WAS ENRTE FROM PRB TO CRQ AT 9500 FT. AT APPROX 20 NM NW OF LAX; APCH ASKED HOW I WOULD LIKE TO TRANSITION LAX BRAVO. I REQUESTED 'THE SHORELINE RTE.' APCH ASKED IF I KNEW THE ALT FOR THE SHORELINE. I ANSWERED THAT I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO ASSIGN ME AN ALT (AS STATED ON THE TAC INSET). ATC INFORMED THE ALT FOR THE SHORELINE RTE IS 5500 FT AND IF I WANTED TO MAINTAIN 9500 FT I SHOULD CHOOSE A DIFFERENT CLASS B TRANSITION. NOT HAVING STUDIED THE OTHER TRANSITIONS I CHOSE TO STAY WITH THE SHORELINE RTE AND DSND; AND WAS CLRED THROUGH LAX BRAVO AT 5500 FT VIA THE SHORELINE RTE. I MADE A RAPID DSCNT TO 5500 FT. I ATTEMPTED TO INTERCEPT THE LAX 323 DEG RADIAL AS I WAS DSNDING. I MISTAKENLY HAD VNY 113.1 TUNED IN INSTEAD OF LAX 113.6. I WAS UNABLE TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL DUE TO MY ERROR AND WAS RADAR VECTORED TO THE RADIAL. I WAS STILL UNABLE TO REINTERCEPT THE RADIAL DUE TO HAVING THE INCORRECT FREQ TUNED IN; AND WAS RADAR VECTORED AGAIN. DURING THIS TIME I HAD ALSO INADVERTENTLY DSNDED TO 5100 FT; WHICH I CORRECTED; AFTER BEING PROMPTED. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR ASKED 'IF I WAS FAMILIAR' WITH THE SHORELINE RTE. I ANSWERED NO; INTERPING 'FAMILIAR' MEANING HAD I USED THE SHORELINE BEFORE. I HAD STUDIED THE CHART BUT IT WAS MY FIRST TIME FLYING THE 'SHORELINE.' HE INFORMED ME THAT I HAD ACCEPTED A CLRNC AND IF I WASN'T FAMILIAR; THEN I SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED THE CLRNC. AT THIS POINT I WAS EXITING THE LAX BRAVO AND I REALIZED MY RADIOS HAD THE WRONG FREQ. THE CTLR HAD BEEN VERY PATIENT THROUGHOUT.
