Synopsis

MD80 FLT CREW HAS A TCAS RA WHILE DEP FROM RWY 29R FAT.

Narrative

AFTER TKOF FROM FAT; WE WERE CLBING OUT AND WERE ISSUED A CLRNC TO CLB TO 10000 FT AND TO TURN L FROM THE RWY HDG (RWY 29R) TO 120 DEGS. AS WE APCHED THE 120 DEG HDG WE WERE CLBING THROUGH APPROX 6000 FT. AN ACFT APPEARED ON THE TCAS DISPLAY THAT WAS INSIDE THE 3 MI RANGE (I ESTIMATE ABOUT 1.5 MI AWAY) AND WE HAD LESS THAN 1000 FT VERT SEPARATION FROM THE TARGET. TCAS ISSUED AN RA TO DSND NOW AND THE ARC ON THE VSI WAS AT APPROX 2500 FPM DSNDING. I IMMEDIATELY CLICKED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND PUSHED THE ACFT OVER TO ABOUT 5-8 DEGS BELOW THE HORIZON. AS I PUSHED THE ACFT OVER; I SAW THE TARGET ON TCAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF US AND WAS EXTREMELY CLOSE ACCORDING TO THE TCAS. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE ACFT L AND USED BTWN 20-45 DEGS OF BANK TO GET CLR OF THE CONFLICT. DURING THIS TIME I HAD THE FO ADVISE ATC THAT WE WERE RESPONDING TO AN RA AND WHEN HE COULD GET A WORD IN (ATC WAS VERY BUSY). ATC THEN ADVISED US WHEN ABLE TO TURN ON COURSE AND CLB TO 10000 FT. I SPOKE WITH THE FLT ATTENDANT AND THEY SAID NO PAX ASKED THEM ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE INCIDENT. IT APPEARS THAT THE FO AND I WERE THE ONLY ONES WHO KNEW ANYTHING HAPPENED. THE REST OF THE FLT PROCEEDED WITHOUT ANY PROBS.
