Synopsis

C402 PLT LNDG CLT WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 18L BY GND CTL; BUT THEN TOLD TO HOLD SHORT FOR DEP TFC ON RWY 18L AFTER XING HOLD LINES.

Narrative

I LANDED ON RWY 23 WITH A TSTM APCHING AND WINDSHEAR WARNING IN EFFECT; CLRED ON TXWY R; STOPPED AND CONTACTED GND CTL. I WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 18L ON TXWY R AND TAXI WHICH I PROCEEDED TO DO AFTER READING BACK MY TAXI CLRNC. BY THE TIME I REACHED THE HOLD LINE THE STORM WAS ALMOST OVER THE ARPT WITH GUSTY WINDS AND WHAT LOOKED LIKE SMOKE BLOWING ACROSS THE NORTHERN PART OF THE ARPT; I HAD TO WORK AT JUST KEEPING THE ACFT STRAIGHT. THEN I HEARD GND CTL TELLING ME TO HOLD POS; REPEATED 3 OR 4 TIMES. I STOPPED WITH THE ENTIRE ACFT OVER THE HOLD LINE ON THE RWY SIDE AND INFORMED GND CTL THAT I WAS OVER THE HOLD LINE. WHEN I LOOKED TO MY L; I SAW A B737 ON ITS TKOF RUN ON RWY 18L NO MORE THAN 100 YARDS FROM THE TXWY INTXN. IT ROTATED JUST PAST THE TXWY I WAS ON. THERE WAS NO WAY IT COULD HAVE MISSED ME HAD I NOT STOPPED. I ALWAYS MAKE A POINT OF CHKING THE RWY BOTH WAYS WHEN CLRED TO CROSS; AND WHEN INSTRUCTING WOULD EMPHASIZE THAT POINT TO MY STUDENTS AND SHOW THEM THE FAA RWY INCURSION DVD WHICH I HAVE IN MY POSSESSION BUT PERHAPS DUE TO THE UNUSUAL WX CONDITIONS ON THE ARPT THIS ONE TIME I HADN'T DONE SO. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THE PROB WAS CAUSED BY LACK OF COM BTWN THE TWR AND GND CTLRS; BUT SINCE I WASN'T MONITORING THE TWR FREQ; I HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING FOR SURE. IT WAS MADE WORSE BY MY BRIEF DISTR BY THE 'SMOKE' BLOWING OVER THE RAMP AND TXWYS TO MY L -- I THOUGHT THERE WAS A FIRE SOMEWHERE. THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLY TO FOLLOW MY OWN RULES; AND THE ADVICE GIVEN IN THE FAA DVD -- CHK BOTH WAYS!
