Synopsis

AN A320 IN CRUISE AT FL360 DECLARED AN EMER DUE TO RAPID CYCLING OF ECAM 'SMOKE FORWARD AFT CARGO SMOKE;' 'SMOKE LAVATORY DETECTION FAULT' AND 'SMOKE LAVATORY + CARGO DETECTION FAULT' VISUAL AND AURAL INDICATIONS.

Narrative

WHILE IN STABILIZED CRUISE FL360; 40 MINS FROM LNDG GOT THE FOLLOWING CYCLING INDICATIONS FOR APPROX 10-15 MINS: ECAM'S/CAUTION LIGHTS; SMOKE FORWARD/AFT CARGO SMOKE; SMOKE LAVATORY AND CRG DETECTION FAULT; SMOKE LAVATORY DETECTION FAULT. THE INDICATIONS CYCLED RAPIDLY WITH ALL VISUAL/AURAL INDICATIONS GOING AWAY AND COMING BACK WITHOUT ENOUGH TIME TO ANALYZE EACH EVENT BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED BY ANOTHER. CAPT NOTIFIED FLT ATTENDANTS AND ASKED THEM TO VISUALLY CHK ALL LAVATORIES AND FLOOR AREAS AROUND FORWARD/AFT CARGO PITS. THE FLT ATTENDANTS ALSO USED 2 PLTS SITTING IN BACK TO HELP THEM CONDUCT CURSORY INSPECTIONS OF AFFECTED AREAS. NO ABNORMALITIES WERE RPTED BY ANY CABIN PERSONNEL. DURING ALL ECAM CYCLING AND UP TO THAT POINT THERE WERE NO ADVERSE CONDITIONS NOTED ON ANY OF THE SYS SCREENS. WE ELECTED TO ASK CTR FOR PRIORITY HANDLING. UPON CONFERENCE WITH DISPATCH/MAINT; THE DECISION WAS MADE TO DECLARE AN EMER AS A PRECAUTION AND HAVE THE AIRPLANE INSPECTED BY FIRE PERSONNEL UPON LNDG. REST OF CRUISE; DSCNT; AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL AND WE HAD NO FURTHER ECAMS AFTER THOSE WARNINGS. AIRPLANE WAS STOPPED FOR AN INITIAL FIRE DEPT INSPECTION ON TXWY OFF OF RWY. THEY GAVE US OK TO TAXI TO GATE WHERE THEY CONDUCTED A VISUAL INSPECTION OF FORWARD/AFT PITS BY OPENING THEM AT GATE BEFORE JETBRIDGE WAS BROUGHT UP. MAINT MET AIRPLANE; FIXED CARGO DETECTION SYS AND WE DISPATCHED WITH SAID AIRPLANE TO ZZZ AS CONTINUATION OF FLT.
