A319 AIRBUS FLT CREW EXPERIENCES AN ENG COMPRESSOR STALL DURING DEP.

Narrative

WE DEPARTED AND EXPERIENCED ENG #1 COMPRESSOR STALL PASSING THROUGH 8500 FT. THERE WAS A MOMENTARY PWR LOSS; LOUD BANG; ECAM AND YAW INTO ENG #1. RIGHT AFTER THE STALL; PWR CAME BACK UP AND THE ECAM WENT AWAY. THE ENG ECAM PAGE WAS PULLED UP AND ENG #1 INDICATIONS MIRRORED ENG #2; WHICH WERE NORMAL. ATC WAS ADVISED OF THE PROB AND A PRECAUTIONARY RETURN TO YYY WAS REQUESTED. WE ALSO ADVISED DISPATCH; VIA ACARS; OF THE RETURN TO XXX. WE MADE A PA TO THE PAX ABOUT THE PRECAUTIONARY RETURN TO THE ARPT AND THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE TOLD NO CABIN PREPARATION WAS EXPECTED. THE MAX ALT REACHED WAS 9300 FT AND ATC ADVISED US TO DSND TO 8000 FT FOR AN ILS APCH. WE TOUCHED DOWN AT JUST UNDER 144000 LBS AND UNDER THE SINK RATE PER THE OVERWT LNDG CHKLIST. A LONG LNDG ROLL TO TXWY; AND A LONG TAXI VIA THE BRIDGE RTE TO GATE XXX PRODUCED A MAX BRAKE TEMP ON WHEEL #3 OF 370 DEGS C. MAINT MET THE ACFT AND DIDN'T STATE WHAT THEY HAD FOUND PRIOR TO OUR LEAVING FOR OUR NEXT LEG TO YVR. TOTAL TIME AIRBORNE WAS ABOUT 10 MINS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE ENG STALL WAS ONLY MOMENTARY AND THE ECAM WARNING CAME ON FOR JUST SEVERAL SECONDS. AFTER THE ENG STALL THE ENG RETURNED TO NORMAL OPS AND THE FO CHKED THE ENG ECAM DISPLAY FOR ANY FURTHER MALFUNCTIONS AND THERE WERE NONE INDICATED. THEY DISCUSSED THE MOMENTARY MALFUNCTION AND ELECTED TO RETURN FOR LNDG. HE INDICATED THAT AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED DUE TO THE ENG FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. ALL PRECAUTIONS WERE TAKEN REGARDING A POSSIBLE CABIN EVAC AND THE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED OF THE RETURN. THE RPTR INDICATED THAT HE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE REASON FOR THE COMPRESSOR STALL AS HE WAS REASSIGNED ANOTHER ACFT AND DEPARTED PRIOR TO A MAINT HAVING AN ANSWER.
