Synopsis

A CL65 ENTERED HOLD AT ODF VORTAC USING STANDARD R-HAND PATTERN CONTRARY TO THE L-HAND PATTERN THAT WAS PUBLISHED.

Narrative

ATC INSTRUCTED CREW TO HOLD AT ODF AS PUBLISHED. FO WAS PF; HE ENTERED ODF IN THE COLLINS FMS; THE FMS ACKNOWLEDGED THE FIX AND THE PROPER RADIAL TO HOLD ON WAS AUTOMATICALLY IN THE DATABASE. I VERIFIED THE RADIAL AND THE FO EXECUTED THE FMS. OVER THE FIX THE ACFT TURNED R FOR A STANDARD HOLDING PATTERN WHEN L-HAND TURNS WERE PUBLISHED. ATC NOTIFIED CREW OF INCORRECT TURN AND IT WAS CORRECTED. I BELIEVE THIS EVENT WAS CAUSED BY THE CREW THINKING THAT SINCE THE FMS KNEW WE WERE ON THE FALCON ARR; AND SINCE THE HOLD IS PUBLISHED ON THE ARR; THE FMS THEREFORE KNOWS WHAT THE PUBLISHED HOLD IS JUST AS IT KNOWS THE PUBLISHED HOLD ON A MISSED APCH. THIS APPEARS TO BE INCORRECT. ALTHOUGH THE FMS KNOWS THE CORRECT HOLD FOR MISSED APCHS; IT APPARENTLY DOES NOT KNOW THE PUBLISHED HOLDS ON THE ARR. WHEN WE CHOSE THE FIX TO HOLD AT; THE FMS SIMPLY CREATED A HOLD THERE WITH THE INBOUND COURSE TO THAT FIX AS THE HOLDING COURSE; WHICH HAPPENED TO BE THE PUBLISHED HOLDING COURSE AND GAVE US THE FALSE JUDGEMENT OF THE FMS KNOWING THE PUBLISHED HOLDING ON THE ARR. AND SINCE THE FMS WAS ACTUALLY CREATING A HOLD FROM SCRATCH; IT AUTOMATICALLY GAVE IT STANDARD R TURNS; NOT THE PUBLISHED L TURNS.
