Synopsis

A320 FO CALLS IN TOO FATIGUED FOR NEXT DAY'S FLYING. CREW SCHEDULER OFFERS EXTRA DOLLARS TO FLY ANYWAY.

Narrative

ON DAY 3 OF A 4-DAY TRIP; I CALLED THE CREW DESK AND TOLD THEM I WOULD BE TOO FATIGUED TO FLY THE FINAL DAY WHEN I FINISHED THAT THIRD DAY'S FLYING. THIS WAS BTWN LEG 3 AND LEG 4 OF THAT DAY. PREVIOUSLY; WHILE ENRTE (DURING THE THIRD LEG) IT BECAME APPARENT THAT WE WOULD BE OVER 8 IN 24 (NUMEROUS DELAYS FOR FLOW; TKOF TFC; WX DEVS). I RECEIVED AN ACARS MESSAGE OFFERING SCHEDULE INTEGRITY PAY IF I WOULD WAIVE MY CONTRACTUAL REST. I DECLINED; AND TOLD CREW SCHEDULING I WOULD BE DONE FLYING FOR THAT TRIP DUE TO FATIGUE. WE HAD FLOWN 9+08 HRS THAT DAY (12+28 DUTY TIME); AND A TOTAL OF 21+17 HRS THE PREVIOUS 3 DAYS. THE SCHEDULED LAYOVER WAS 11+55; BUT WITH DELAYS WOULD HAVE BEEN BARE CONTRACTUAL MINIMUM. THIS TRIP IS AN EXAMPLE OF ONE WHICH IS BUILT WITHOUT REASONABLE ABILITY TO GET PROPER REST. IT STARTS WITH AN XG30 SHOW; HAS A SHORT LAYOVER; THEN AN XA57 SHOW REQUIRING A BODY CLOCK ADJUSTMENT OF 5 HRS (IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT); THEN AN XF45 SHOW (ANOTHER 4+45 BODY ADJUSTMENT); AND FINALLY AN XD17 SHOW AFTER MINIMUM REST. IT IS UNREASONABLE TO ADJUST YOUR BODY CLOCK THIS QUICKLY AT THESE TIMES. THE DELAYS ON DAY 3 (A 4 LEG DAY) ARE PREDICTABLE; AND NOT UNUSUAL. IT SEEMS THAT OFFERING SCHEDULE INTEGRITY PAY IS QUITE SIMPLY AN ENTICEMENT TO GET PLTS TO FLY TIRED.
