Synopsis

A BELLANCA VIKING'S NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED ON LNDG FOLLOWING A NOSE GEAR CHATTER. THE ACFT UNCTLABLY DEPARTED THE RWY CAUSING PROP DAMAGE.

Narrative

ON NOV/TUE AT APPROX XA16 I WAS COMPLETING THE GPS 9 APCH INTO THE ARPT. I HAD FLARED AND THE MAIN GEAR HAD TOUCHED THE GND AND BEGAN THE FINAL LNDG PROCESS. I WAS TRAVELING APPROX 70 MPH INDICATED AIRSPD AT TOUCHDOWN. I LANDED ON RWY 9 AT THE 1000 FT MARKER AT IDLE PWR. WINDS WERE 280 DEGS AT 4 KTS LESS THAN 1 MIN BEFORE TOUCHDOWN AND THE RWY HDG WAS 089 MAG. THE RWY WAS 4500 FT LONG APPROX. NORMAL TOUCHDOWN AND LNDG DISTANCE WITH A CALM WIND IS LESS THAN 1500 WITH MINIMAL BRAKING. UPON THE NOSE TOUCHING DOWN; I FELT A CHATTER IN THE RUDDER PEDALS; AS IF THE NOSE GEAR WAS MOVING FROM SIDE TO SIDE OR CASTERING. IMMEDIATELY THE ACFT BEGAN PULLING TO THE L. BY THIS TIME I WAS DOWN TO APPROX 50-55 MPH AND TRIED AT FIRST TO PULL THE NOSE OFF; BUT WITHOUT PWR I WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. I CONSIDERED A GAR AND SAW A 100 FT HIGH DIKE LESS THAN 300 YARDS IN FRONT OF ME AND IMMEDIATELY ABANDONED THAT IDEA. I PUSHED HARD ON THE R RUDDER AND THEN HARD ON THE BRAKES. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO THE RUDDER PEDAL AND THE ACFT CONTINUED TO GO L UNTIL IT GOT ALMOST SIDEWAYS. IT THEN EXITED THE RWY; COLLAPSING THE NOSE GEAR; CAUSING EXTENSIVE PROP DAMAGE AND DAMAGE TO THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR. THERE WAS NO FIRE; AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES.
