PIPER PA28 PLT HAS A RWY EXCURSION DURING LNDG.
ON INITIAL LNDG ROLL; XWIND GUST PUSHED ACFT TO THE L OFF RWY INTO ADJACENT FLAT-BOTTOMED RETENTION AREA. A GND LOOP LOOKED LIKELY. ACFT WAS STILL AT APPROX 60 KTS IN THE GRASS AND HEADING TOWARDS A TXWY CULVERT PIPE; PARKED ACFT AND STRUCTURES BEYOND. DIRECTIONAL CTL AND BRAKING IN THE GRASS WAS DIFFICULT. IT LOOKED AS THOUGH THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH DISTANCE FOR A COMPLETE STOP WITHOUT DAMAGE. APPLIED FULL THROTTLE; LOWERED A WING AND GOT THE NOSE POINTED BACK TO THE R AWAY FROM OBSTRUCTIONS. PROCEEDED WITH A SOFT FIELD STYLE TKOF GETTING INTO GND EFFECT QUICKLY BY THE NEXT TXWY. MADE A RADIO CALL THAT I HAD JUST DEPARTED THE RWY AND WAS GOING TO EXTEND MY UPWIND TO RECOVER FULLY. REMAINED IN A WIDE PATTERN UNTIL CALM THEN HEADED BACK TO ZZZ. ALERTED ZZZ TWR OF SITUATION AND REQUESTED A FLYBY TO HAVE THEM CHK THE LNDG GEAR/TIRES EVEN THOUGH ROLL IN GRASS AREA WAS SMOOTH. THEY ADVISED EVERYTHING LOOKED GOOD. LANDED UNEVENTFULLY AND RPTED INCIDENT TO ZZZ PLTS. AFTER THINKING ABOUT THE EVENTS REALIZED THE AILERONS WERE NEUTRAL ONCE THE MAINS HAD TOUCHED; AND SHOULD STILL HAVE BEEN PUTTING THE R WING INTO THE WIND. ENSUING XWIND GUST WAS SUFFICIENT TO LIFT THE WING AND START THE YAW TO THE L.
