Synopsis

A CRJ200 FAILED TO MAKE A CROSSING RESTRICTION IN DSCNT; AT LEAST IN PART BECAUSE OF DISTRACTION CAUSED BY FUMES FROM AN AIR CONDITIONING PACK.

Narrative

ON FLT TO JFK WE HAD AN ALT DEVIATION. WE HAD AN EARLY MORNING REPORT TIME. AFTER TKOF WE HAD A NORMAL ISSUE WITH TOO MUCH DE-ICE SMELL/FUMES COMING FROM OUR LEFT PACK. WE TOOK APPROPRIATE ACTIONS AND THEN NOTIFIED MAINT VIA RADIO. PROCEEDED FOR ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. PRIOR TO HARTY WE WERE AT CRUISE OF FL250 AND GIVEN A CLRNC OF FL230 AT HARTY. WE SET FL230 IN THE ALT ALERTER AND CONTINUED. WE THEN BEGAN PREPARING FOR LNDG AT JFK. WE GOT ATIS; PERFORMANCE; AND NOTAM REVIEW OF JFK OUT OF THE WAY; THEN BEGAN TO REVIEW THE ISSUE WITH THE PACK. CLE THEN CONTACTED US AND ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO MAKE OUR CROSSING RESTRICTION. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE AND BEGAN OUR DSCNT; LEVELING JUST PAST HARTY. I ASKED ATC IF THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE MISSED CROSSING RESTRICTION AND HE SAID 'HE DIDN'T THINK SO.' WE WERE THEN TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER FREQ AND PROCEEDED WITH NO FURTHER ISSUES.SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 719786: THE COMBINATION OF RECEIVING THE ALT RESTRICTION VERY EARLY AND OUR COMBINED FOCUS ON THE PREVIOUS MAINT PROB AND CREW BRIEFINGS MOST LIKELY WERE THE CAUSE OF US TO LOSE FOCUS AND NOT MAKE THE ALTITUDE RESTRICTION.
