Synopsis

CROWDED TXWYS; A HARRIED GND CTLR AND CLOSE PROXIMITY BEHIND A HEAVY JET RESULTS IN JET BLAST DAMAGE TO A CARJ AT JFK.

Narrative

AFTER LNDG ON RWY 13L IN JFK; TWR INSTRUCTED US TO PROCEED L ON TXWY B AND CONTACT GND. GND FREQ WAS BUSY. THE CTLR WAS BEING SHORT WITH PLTS AND ACFT WERE BEING TOLD; 'DON'T CALL ME; I'LL CALL YOU.' GND INSTRUCTED US TO GIVE WAY TO A B747; THEN CONTINUE ON TXWY B SHORT OF TXWY H. WE SAW THE B747 EXITING RWY 22R ON TXWY G; BUT HE STOPPED IN THE INTXN OF TXWYS F AND A. SEEING THAT WE WERE CLR; AND KNOWING THAT IN SUCH A GND OP HE COULD WAIT A LONG WHILE FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS; I ELECTED TO CONTINUE AS PREVIOUSLY; CLRED. AS WE PASSED BEHIND HIM; THE GND CTLR SPOKE IN AN ANGRY SOUNDING TONE DEMANDING THAT HE TURN L ON TXWY A. IMMEDIATELY; HE RESPONDED WITH A VIGOROUS AND RAPID APPLICATION OF PWR WHICH STRUCK OUR ACFT; CAUSING IT TO SHUDDER AND CRACKING THE FO'S SIDE WINDOW. A THOROUGH POSTFLT REVEALED NO OTHER DAMAGE AND A SUBSEQUENT CALL TO MAINT CTL VIA THE COMPANY SECURITY OPS 800 NUMBER CONFIRMED THIS; AT APPROX XA30 PM. I BELIEVE THAT THE ANGRY TONE OF THE GND CTLR CAUSED THE B747 PLT TO RESPOND WITH MORE THRUST THAN WOULD NORMALLY BE REQUIRED FOR TAXIING. IT CERTAINLY MADE ME HESITATE TO BLOCK TFC OR ADD TO RADIO CONGESTION BY STOPPING OR ASKING A QUESTION. THE CLRNC BTWN THE 2 ACFT WAS ABOUT THE SAME AS I NORMALLY ALLOW WHEN TAXIING BEHIND B747 IN LINE FOR TKOF; AND I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THAT LEVEL OF JET BLAST BEFORE. IN THE FUTURE I WILL AVOID PASSING BEHIND A B747 IN SIMILAR SITS WITHOUT FIRST ASKING GND TO HAVE HIM KEEP HIS THRUST AT IDLE. I WILL BE MORE PRONE TO SETTING THE BRAKE REGARDLESS OF TFC CONGESTION AND I WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED INTO SILENCE BY CTLRS WHO SEEM SHORT TEMPERED.
