Synopsis

A MD80 CLBING THROUGH FL260 LOST LEFT ENG OIL PRESSURE AND QTY. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND ACFT RETURN TO DEP ARPT. BRAKES OVERHEATED AFTER LNDG.

Narrative

WE DEPARTED ZZZ WITH ALL ENG INDICATIONS AND QUANTITIES NORMAL. AS WE APCHED A POINT TO THE NW OF ABC AND FL260; THE L ENG OIL PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE VERIFIED THE LIGHT. WE IMMEDIATELY MADE A R TURN; DECLARING AN EMER AND PROCEEDED DIRECTLY TO ZZZ. OIL QUANTITY DECREASED TO ZERO. WE FOLLOWED THE QRH PROCS AND SHUT DOWN THE L ENG. OUR DSCNT PROFILE AND THE TIME TO FOLLOW THE PRESCRIBED PROCS MADE ZZZ A MORE SUITABLE ARPT THAN ZZZ1. THE FLT ATTENDANT HAD THE SERVING CARTS OUT WHEN I CONTACTED THEM AND NEEDED TIME TO STOW THEM. BY THE TIME WE PASSED BY ZZZ1 WE WERE TOO HIGH AND WOULD HAVE REQUIRED A CIRCLE. LNDG WAS OVERWT (147300 LBS) BUT SMOOTH; WITH LESS THAN 500 FPM RATE OF DSCNT. WE LANDED STRAIGHT IN. SINGLE ENG TIME WAS APPROX 18 MINS. EMER VEHICLES FOLLOWED US TO THE GATE AS A PRECAUTION. AS WE WERE APCHING THE GATE; BRAKE TEMP HAD NOT YET EXCEEDED 300 DEGS. BY THE TIME WE GOT TO THE GATE THE BRAKES WERE OVERHEATING. AFTER WE WERE SAFELY CHOCKED; WE DID NOT SET THE PARKING BRAKE. SEVERAL MINS AFTER THE PAX HAD DEPLANED; THE BRAKE TEMP SUBSEQUENTLY ROSE TO 400 DEGS AND THE L TIRE PLUGS BLEW; CAUSING THE L TIRES TO GO FLAT. 3 ITEMS WERE PUT IN THE LOGBOOK. LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE WITH SUBSEQUENT ENG SHUTDOWN; OVERWT LNDG AND BRAKE OVER-TEMP.
