Synopsis

A B737-700 ACFT REQUIRED EDDY CURRENT OR DYE PENETRANT INSPECTION OF RIGHT HORIZ LEADING EDGE DAMAGE WAS DEFERRED WITHOUT MAINT CONTROL NOTIFIED.

Narrative

I WAS ASSIGNED TO WORK A BIRD STRIKE ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THE HORIZ ON ACFT X. PREVIOUS SHIFT WAS THE SHIFT THAT FOUND THE DAMAGE. BEING THE DAMAGE WAS NEXT TO A RIB AT ABOUT STATION 129.50; WE WERE REQUIRED TO REMOVE THE LEADING EDGE OF THE R/H HORIZ. THE DENT WAS ABOUT 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND ABOUT 0.05 INCHES DEEP. ENGINEERING REQUESTED WE TRY TO REWORK THE DENT BACK TO AS CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL CONTOUR AS POSSIBLE. WE DID THE REWORK AND DAMAGE ABOUT 1.25 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND ABOUT .025 INCHES DEEP. UPON DOING THE REWORK THE SRM REQUIRES AN EDDY CURRENT OR A PENETRANT CHK OF THE AREA. ZZZ HAD NO ONE QUALIFIED TO PERFORM EITHER. WE THEN ASKED ENGINEERING FOR AN EA (ENGINEERING AUTH) TO DEFER THE EDDY CURRENT OR PENETRANT CHK. ENGINEERING GAVE US AN EA (ENGINEERING AUTH) TO DEFER IT FOR 10 FLT CYCLES; WHICH WE DID. MY PROB IS I NEVER CONTACTED MAINT CTL ON THE DEFERRAL. AFTER WAKING UP THIS EVENING I REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND CALLED ZZZ LINE TO HAVE THEM CALL MAINT CTL TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE AWARE OF THE DEFERRAL. I WAS TOLD THE ACFT HAS ONLY MADE ONE FLT CYCLE TODAY. THEY UPDATED THE LOG PAGE.
