Synopsis

CARJ STOPS CLB AT 3500 FT VICE 10000 FT MSL DUE TO MIS-SET ALTITUDE ALERT.

Narrative

I WAS RECEIVING THE CLRNC FROM ATL AND THEY GAVE ME JUST THE SQUAWK AND A DEP THAT WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. IT WAS NOT THE FULL CLRNC THAT I WAS USED TO RECEIVING AND THE CAPT AND I DISCUSSED; AND TRIED TO DECIPHER WHAT DEP ATC HAD GIVEN AND ESTABLISHED IT WAS THE GEETK 5 DEP. I HAD PREVIOUSLY SET IN THE SQUAWK CODE BUT BECAUSE OF THE NON-STANDARD CLRNC FAILED TO SET IN THE DEP HDG; ALTITUDE AND FREQUENCY. ON THE TAXI OUT I SET THE DEP FREQUENCY IN AND WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR TAKEOFF WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 070 DEGS. WE TOOK OFF BEHIND A B757 AND ON CLB OUT HIT WAKE TURBULENCE RIGHT AT THE TIME THAT OUR ALTITUDE ALERTER SET AT 3500 FT CAME UP AND AT THE SAME TIME ATC WAS GETTING ON US TO SPEED UP AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE IT WAS SEVERAL COMPOUNDING PROBLEMS AT THE SAME TIME AND WE QUICKLY SPED UP TO 250 KTS. AND THEN ATC QUESTIONED WHY WE WERE NOT CLBING AND HAD LEVELED OFF AT 3500 FT. IT WAS THEN I HAD REALIZED I HAD NOT SET IN THE APPROPRIATE ALTITUDE FOR THE DEP AND WE THEN STARTED THE CLIMB.
