Synopsis

FORCED LANDING FOLLOWING ENGINE FAILURE RESULTS IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO SMA CANARD.

Narrative

THE PROB WAS DUE TO ENG FAILURES PROBABLY DUE TO AIR FILTER OCCLUSION (DIRTY) OR FUEL CONTAMINATION. HAD 6 GALLONS IN R TANK AND 6 GALLONS IN L; APPROX. WAS RUNNING ROUGH LAST 5 MINS OF FLT. I HAD RADIO FAILURE ALSO. UNABLE TO CONTACT APCH OR TWR WITH INSTALLED RADIO. I DO NOT KNOW WHY. UNABLE ALSO TO CONTACT THEM ON HANDHELD RADIO. AFTER ENG GUST ON BASE LEG; PROP STOPPED. UNABLE TO START WITH STARTER; ENG TURNED OVER -- NO JOY. I HAD TO FLY AIRPLANE. THE GREEN GRASS AT THRESHOLD LOOKED FLAT AND OK FOR A FORCED LNDG. I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS A 20-30 DEG HILL. AFTER I FORCED-LANDED; AFTER SHEARING OFF THE GEARS; THE TWR OPERATOR TOLD ME HE COULD NOT SEE ME! HE THOUGHT I CRASHED INTO THE WOODS AT THE S END OF THE FIELD AND ACROSS THE ROAD. HE COULD NOT SEE ME FROM THE TWR! -- THIS HE TOLD ME. HE ALSO TOLD ME HE DID NOT FEEL I VIOLATED ANY FARS. I WAS SQUAWKING 7600 AND HE DID NOT SEE THIS; SO MY XPONDER ALSO WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WHY; I DO NOT KNOW. EVENT WOULD HAVE NOT HAPPENED IF I HAD KNOWN THAT THE GRASS AT THE END OF THE RWY WAS UP HILL 20-30 DEGS. I DID NOT KNOW THIS. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME INTO ZZZ. THE CANARD ON THE LONG EZ MUST BE BELOW THE HORIZON ON LNDG FLARE. BECAUSE I LANDED UPHILL; THE NOSE GEAR DUG IN AND SHEARED OFF; THEN THE FLASHING LNDG LIGHT; THEN MY SPD BRAKE; THEN THE MAINS; THEN THE BOTTOM COWL -- ALL WITHIN A SECOND! I RAN OUT OF ALT AND AIRSPD AND I ONLY SAW THE HILL ABOUT 40 FT ABOVE IT. TOO LATE TO CORRECT THE ALT. TERRIBLE FEELING.
