Synopsis

A P68C; A LIGHT TWIN-ENGINE ACFT; ON INITIAL CLB SUFFERED R ENGINE FAILURE RESULTING IN THE R PROPELLER ASSEMBLY DEPARTING THE ACFT. THE LYCOMING ENGINE WAS 45 HOURS BEYOND THE RECOMMENDED TBO.

Narrative

ON THE CLB AT AN ALT OF APPROX 350 FT AGL THE R HAND PROPELLER ASSEMBLY DEPARTED THE ENGINE AS EVIDENCED BY A LOUD BANG SOUND; THE ACFT YAWING TO THE R; AND VISUALLY VERIFIED BY THE R SEAT PAX WHEN HE NONCHALANTLY STATED; 'HEY; THE PROP'S GONE.' THE PROPELLER DID NOT MAKE CONTACT WITH THE ACFT. THE PROPELLER ASSEMBLY FELL ONTO THE ARPT PROPERTY WITHOUT HARM TO ANYONE ON THE GND. A SAFE SINGLE ENGINE LNDG WAS MADE. AT THIS TIME THE CONCLUSION OF THE INCIDENT; BASED ON IN-FLT OCCURRENCES AND A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE AND PROPELLER ASSEMBLY; IS THAT THE ENGINE CATASTROPHICALLY SEIZED. A FURTHER DETAILED INSPECTION WILL DETERMINE THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF THE ENGINE/PROPELLER FAILURE. THE LYCOMING ENGINE HAD 2045 HRS SINCE FACTORY REBUILD DURING MARCH 2003. NO MAJOR MAINT HAS BEEN REQUIRED ON THIS ENGINE SINCE THE FACTORY REBUILD; AND ALL OIL SAMPLE ANALYSIS HAVE RPTED NO NEGATIVE TRENDS.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE LYCOMING ENGINE HAD LOGGED 2045 HOURS SINCE FACTORY REMANUFACTURE; 45 HOURS BEYOND THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED TBO. THE VULCANAIR P68C WAS ORIGINALLY MANUFACTURED BY PARTANAVIA IN ITALY.
