B757-200 FLT CREW AT FL300 DETECT BURNING SMELL AND AFTER COMPLYING WITH QRH PROCEDURES; DECLARE AN EMERGENCY AND DIVERT TO THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT WITH NO FURTHER DIFFICULTIES.
XA33Z CRUISE FLT AT 30000 FT; 115 NM W OF ZZZ VOR (095 DEG RADIAL) THE FO NOTED A BURNING SMELL; WHICH WAS CONFIRMED BY THE CAPT. THE COCKPIT DOME LIGHTS WERE ON AND NEITHER CREW MEMBER NOTICED ANY VISIBLE SIGNS OF SMOKE. BOTH CREW MEMBERS DONNED OXYGEN MASKS WITH 100% SELECTED. THE CREW MEMBERS THOUGHT THE SOURCE OF THE SMELL WAS CIRCULATING IN THE AIR CONDITIONING SYS. XA36Z THE FLT CREW ACCOMPLISHED THE 'SMOKE OR FUMES AIR CONDITIONING' CHKLIST. THE FLT CREW BEGAN TO CONSIDER DIVERT ARPT OPTIONS WHILE ALLOWING TIME FOR THE SMELL TO DISSIPATE. THERE WERE STILL NO VISIBLE SIGNS OF SMOKE AT THIS POINT. THE CAPT BEGAN TYPING AN ACARS MESSAGE TO DISPATCH TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION AND ALERT OF THE POSSIBLE DIVERT. XA42Z THE FO ANNOUNCED VISIBLE SMOKE COMING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING GASPER AND THE CAPT CONFIRMED. THE FLT CREW DONNED SMOKE GOGGLES AND DECIDED TO DIVERT. OUR POS WAS 55 NM W OF ZZZ VOR. XA43Z THE FLT CREW DECLARED AN EMER AND RECEIVED A CLRNC DIRECT TO MCI; WHICH WAS 92 NM NW OF THE ACFT'S POS. XA46Z THE FLT CREW ACCOMPLISHED THE 'SMOKE/FUMES REMOVAL' CHKLIST. XA50Z THE FLT CREW NOTICED THAT THE VISIBLE SMOKE OUTPUT APPEARED TO HAVE CEASED. IN ADDITION TO HAVING ATC ALERT DISPATCH AND REQUESTING THAT EMER GND PERSONNEL BE ALERTED; THE FLT CREW DECIDED TO EVALUATE THE SITUATION ONCE ON THE GND BEFORE INITIATING THE 'EVAC' CHKLIST. A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE ACFT FOLLOWING ROLLOUT WAS COORDINATED. XA01Z ON TIME: THE ACFT LANDED SAFELY FOLLOWING A VISUAL APCH BACKED UP BY THE ILS TO RWY 1L. AFTER THE EMER CREW'S INSPECTION AND THE FLT CREW'S EVAL INDICATED NO IMMEDIATE FIRE HAZARD THE FLT CREW ELECTED TO TAXI THE ACFT TO THE PARKING AREA. XA11Z IN TIME: THE FLT CREW ACCOMPLISHED THE NORMAL 'SHUTDOWN AND SECURE' CHKLISTS AND EXITED THE ACFT. XA30 THE MECH NOTIFIED THE FLT CREW THAT WHILE HE WAS IN THE COCKPIT INSPECTING THE ACFT; THE L FORWARD WINDSHIELD CRACKED. THE WINDOW HEAT SWITCHES WERE OFF. A FAULTY WINDOW HEAT CTLR WAS SUSPECTED.
