Synopsis

A CESSNA EXPERIENCED AN NMAC WITH A CESSNA 150 IN THE PATTERN AT BDN.

Narrative

BEND IS AN UNCTLED ARPT AND THERE WERE APPROX 6 AIRPLANES IN THE PATTERN WITH A MIX OF TRAINING ACFT AND HIGH PERFORMANCE ACFT. ADDITIONALLY; AT THE SAME TIME; 2 ACFT WERE ON FREQ ANNOUNCING THEIR PATTERN ENTRY AND POS AT A NEIGHBORING ARPT. AS I TRIED TO ENTER THE DOWNWIND ON THE 45; IT WAS TOO CONGESTED AND I DID 2 360'S FOR SPACING. ON THE THIRD ATTEMPT; IT SEEMED THAT THERE WOULD BE AN OPENING; SO I SLOWED TO 100 KTS WITH FULL FLAPS AND PROCEEDED ONTO THE DOWNWIND. IT APPEARED THAT THE OTHER SLOWER TRAINING ACFT WERE ON THE RADIO TRYING TO FIGURE WHERE THEY WERE IN RELATIONSHIP TO EACH OTHER AHEAD OF ME. TWO OF THEM BROKE OUT OF THE PATTERN. AT THAT POINT; BELIEVING THAT THERE WAS NO ONE IN FRONT OF ME OR THAT THEY WERE FURTHER INTO THE BASE/FINAL AREA AND KNOWING THAT I HAD AN ACFT ON UPWIND APCHING XWIND; I ACCELERATED TO NORMAL PATTERN SPD WITH PARTIALLY RETRACTED FLAPS. I MADE ALL NORMAL POS CALLS ON DOWNWIND; BASE AND FINAL. I DID NOT HEAR ANY OTHER CALLS FROM ANYONE IN THE PATTERN AHEAD OF ME AND I DID NOT HEAR ANY INDICATION OF POSSIBLE INTERFERENCE FROM A 'STEEPED ON' CALL. AS I WAS ABEAM THE NUMBERS ON DOWNWIND; I EXTENDED FULL FLAPS AND BEGAN TO SLOW. AT THE 45 TO THE NUMBERS; I TURNED BASE. TURNING FINAL; ESTABLISHING A SLOW TEST 72 KT APCH WITH NO PWR; I THOUGHT THAT I GLIMPSED MOTION. I LOWERED THE NOSE AND SAW THE WING OF THE C150 IMMEDIATELY BELOW ME. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED FULL PWR AND PULLED THE STICK TO THE BUFFET AND INITIATED A CLBING L TURN. I OFFSET TO THE L; REORIENTED MYSELF IN THE PATTERN FOR SPACING; AND RETURNED FOR LNDG. ON THE GND AFTER LNDG; I SPOKE TO THE OTHER PLT. HE WAS NOT AWARE OF A NEAR MISS. OTHER PLTS IN THE AIR AT THE TIME SUGGESTED THAT THEY THOUGHT THAT THE C150 HAD PERFORMED AN EXTENDED BASE ENTRY INTO THE PATTERN. AND NO ONE WAS CERTAIN THAT THEY HEARD HIM MAKE ANY CLR RADIO CALLS. I VERIFIED THAT HE WAS ON THE CORRECT FREQ. ALTHOUGH IT WAS DAYLIGHT; IT WAS LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. THE WX WAS CLR WITH UNRESTR CEILING AND VISIBILITY.
