Synopsis

EMB170 CAPT MISJUDGES WINGTIP CLRNC WHILE PULLING INTO THE RUN UP PAD AND CONTACTS RIGHT WINGTIP OF A319.

Narrative

WITH BOTH ENGINES RUNNING AND ALL APPROPRIATE CHECKLISTS COMPLETE DURING TAXI TO RWY XXL IN ZZZ. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO ENTER RWY XXL HOLD PAD NEXT TO (RIGHT SIDE) OF AN A319 ALREADY IN PAD. ANOTHER ACFT WAS INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW US INTO THE PAD AND PARK ON OUR RIGHT SIDE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING OUR INSTRUCTIONS. CAPT TAXIED INTO THE HOLD PAD CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE A319 SO AS TO ALLOW THE FOLLOWING ACFT ROOM TO PARK. I VERIFIED CLEAR RIGHT AS WE NEARED THE A319 AND CAPT BEGAN TO TURN RIGHT; LINING UP TO PARALLEL THE A319 (APPROX A 160 HEADING). CAPT CONTINUALLY CHECKED CLRNC WHILE PULLING FORWARD AS I VERIFIED ACFT FOLLOWING (ON OUR RIGHT AT THIS TIME ANOTHER A319) WAS NOT A FACTOR. AS CAPT PULLED UP NEXT TO THE A319; HE CHECKED FORWARD AND COMMENTED THAT THERE WAS MUCH MORE SPACE IN HOLD PAD AHEAD SO HE MOVED FURTHER FORWARD. JUST AT THAT INSTANT (CAPT'S EYES AHEAD); THE TOP OF OUR LEFT WINGLET CONTACTED THE UNDERSIDE OF THE A319'S RIGHT WING JUST INBOARD OF ITS WINGLET AND THERE WAS A BUMP WHICH PROMPTED CAPT TO STOP ACFT. BRAKES SET; CAPT LOOKED OUT SIDE WINDOW AND DESCRIBED THE A319'S WING AS RESTING UPON OUR WINGLET. THE A319 CREW CALLED GND AND STATED THE SITUATION; CONFIRMED BY ME; AND EMER PROCS WERE INITIATED. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE CONTACTED TO DETERMINE IF ANYONE WAS INJURED OR IF THERE WERE ANY ASPECTS OF THE SITUATION UNKNOWN TO THE FLT CREW (NONE). UPON ARR OF EMER SERVICES PERSONNEL; THE ENGINES WERE SHUT DOWN PER THEIR INSTRUCTIONS AND THE INCIDENT COORDINATOR TOOK CONTROL OF THE SCENE. WITH COORDINATION OF EMER SERVICES OUR MAINT PERSONNEL; AND THE FAA; PROCS WERE TAKEN TO ACCOMMODATE PAX OF BOTH ACFT AND SEPARATE ACFT WINGS (ONCE PAX WERE OFF A319; ITS RIGHT STRUT WAS INFLATED WHICH PROVED EFFECTIVE). THE A319 WAS PUSHED CLEAR OF OUR ACFT AND OUR PAX WERE THEN DEPLANED VIA THE FORWARD SERVICE DOOR ONTO A MOBILE LOUNGE.
