2008-07 · NASA ASRS report 795685
AN EMB145 FLT CREW ON SHORT FINAL EXPERIENCED UNCOMMANDED YAW AND ROLL. A SAFE LANDING WAS MADE; BUT THEY THEN FOUND NOSEWHEEL STEERING TO BE INOP; SO THEY WERE TOWED TO THE GATE.
DURING LNDG ON RWY XX IN ZZZ (I WAS THE PF) AT ABOUT 50 FT AGL; THE ACFT YAWED UNCOMMANDED TO THE L FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY A 15-20 DEG ROLL TO THE L. I WAS ABLE TO CORRECT THE YAW AND ROLL AND LANDED SLIGHTLY L OF CTRLINE. THE FLT CTLS DID NOT 'FIGHT' ME WHEN I CORRECTED; THEREFORE; THERE WAS NO NEED TO PUSH THE QUICK DISCONNECT BUTTON. ALSO; THE YAW DAMPER WAS CONFIRMED OFF AT 200 FT AGL. THE TOUCHDOWN ITSELF WAS SMOOTH AND UNEVENTFUL. I WAS ABLE TO CORRECT BACK TO THE CTRLINE BUT WHEN I TRIED TO USE THE TILLER TO STEER OFF THE RWY; IT WAS INOP. THE NOSEWHEEL WAS IN FREE CASTER. WE WERE ABLE TO CLR THE RWY; BUT NEEDED TO BE TOWED TO THE GATE. THE WINDS AT THE TIME OF LNDG WERE 200 DEGS AT 4 KTS AND THE TWR CONFIRMED THAT THERE WERE NO GUSTS. THERE WERE NO OTHER ACFT IN THE VICINITY NOR DID WE LAND IMMEDIATELY AFTER ANOTHER ACFT. AFTER BEING TOWED TO THE GATE; I WROTE UP THE INFLT ANOMALY AS WELL AS THE STEERING SYS INOP. I CONTACTED MAINT; THE CHIEF PLT; THE DIRECTOR OF OPS; AND DISPATCH AND FILLED OUT AN IRREGULARITY RPT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 795686: I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE ACFT YAWED AND BANKED TO THE L. IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO WINDS.
