A B757-200 FLT CREW EXPERIENCED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. THEY RAN THE CHECKLIST; DECLARED AN EMERGENCY; AND DIVERTED TO THE NEAREST SUITABLE AIRPORT.
NE OF ZZZ AT FL390; CAPT ASKED ME IF I SMELLED SMOKE. I TOLD HIM IT SMELLED LIKE MAINT CLEANER OR LUBRICANT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS QUESTION; I NOTICED SMOKE BEHIND THE CAPT'S SEAT. I INFORMED HIM AND WE COMPLIED WITH THE 'SMOKE OR FUMES REMOVAL CHKLIST' MEMORY ITEMS. CAPT DECLARED AN EMER WITH CTR. WE THEN DIVERTED TO THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT WHICH WAS ZZZ1 AND THEN COMPLIED WITH THE 'SMOKE AND FUMES REMOVAL CHKLIST' IN THE QRH. CAPT THEN ASKED ME TO SET UP THE FMC AND RADIOS. AFTER COMPLETING THE FMC AND RADIOS; HE ASKED ME TO DO THE 'IN-RANGE CHKLIST.' AT THIS PHASE OF THE FLT; I WOULD DESCRIBE THE SMOKE AS LIGHT IN THE COCKPIT. WE WERE THEN GIVEN CLRNC TO LAND AT ZZZ1 I ASKED THE TWR TO GIVE US ANY INDICATION OF THE CONDITION OF OUR ACFT. THEY DID NOT INDICATE THAT ANY SMOKE OR FIRE WAS VISIBLE. AFTER LNDG WE COORDINATED WITH ZZZ1 GND AND EMER PERSONNEL TO EVALUATE THE ACFT CONDITION. AFTER A SHORT TAXI WE COMPLETED ALL THE AFTER LNDG; PARKING AND SHUTDOWN CHKLISTS AND PREPARED FOR EVAC. INJURIES -- NONE. FO EXPERIENCED VOMITING AFTER DEPLANING DUE TO A BURNING FEELING IN HIS THROAT. CAPT WAS TAKEN TO THE FIRE STATION AND WAS GIVEN OXYGEN. BOTH PLTS' VISUAL SIGNS WERE CHKED; FO'S WERE NORMAL WITH AN ELEVATED PULSE; CAPT WAS MONITORED FROM INITIAL CONTACT AND WHILE AT THE FIRE STATION. 4 OTHER MAINT PERSONNEL WHO WERE PAX WERE NOT INJURED.
