ACR LGT DEVIATED FROM PUBLISHED HOLDING PATTERN BECAUSE FLT CREW USED FMS PATTERN INSTEAD OF PATTERN AS PUBLISHED ON AERO CHART ENROUTE HIGH ALT.

Narrative

INBND TO BOS (FROM THE S) DSNDING FROM FL220 TO 13000'; WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO HOLD AT SCUPP. THE HOLD WAS DUE TO WX AND TFC IN BOS. I WAS FLYING THE ACFT AND THE CAPT CALLED UP THE HOLDING PATTERN ON THE FMS. THE HOLDING PATTERN DEPICTED WAS S OF THE FIX WITH STANDARD RIGHT TURNS. WE PROCEEDED TO ENTER THE HOLD (DIRECT ENTRY FROM THE S; SEE ILLUSTRATIONS) AND TURN OUTBND WITH 20 MI LEGS APPROVED. JUST PRIOR TO TURNING INBND; THE CTLR SAID HE SHOWED US 20 MI S OF SCUPP. WE CONCURRED. HE THEN SAID THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOLDING E OF THE FIX AND GAVE A LEFT TURN TO 080 DEGS FOR VECTORS TO RE-ENTER THE HOLD AT SCUPP INTXN. BY THEN; WE WERE LEVEL AT 13000' MSL. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE HOLDING CLRNC DID NOT INCLUDE 'HOLD AS PUBLISHED' OR 'HOLD E' OR DETAILS AS TO RADIAL OR STANDARD VS NON-STANDARD TURNS. ANYWAY; WE THEN QUESTIONED WHAT THE FMS HAD GIVEN US AND CHKED THE CHART MORE CLOSELY. THE PUBLISHED HOLD IS INDEED E OF SCUPP WITH LEFT TURNS. BY THE CTLR'S REACTIONS AND THE FACT THAT WE WERE ON THE HOLDING SIDE OF THE FIX; THERE WAS NO APPARENT CONFLICT WITH ANY TFC. IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT THE CTLR WAS VERY SPECIFIC WITH SUBSEQUENT HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS TO OTHER ACFT ONCE HE RECOGNIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED WITH US.
