2007-01 · NASA ASRS report 818797
A Lead Mechanic was informed he may have been involved in the installation of incorrect rivets that were installed as part of an Engineering Order for weight modification improvements on an EMB-145LR; two years earlier.
Informed I may have been involved in the installation of incorrect part number rivets while performing Step 17 in ZZZ in January. Found during maintenance in ZZZ1. I spoke with the Chief Inspector in ZZZ and then filled out a safety report. ZZZ1 is replacing rivets. This was the first weight modification done in ZZZ. I do not recall details due to the time lapse. There may be more documentation on the non-routine job cards that can profile more information and details. Callback conversation with Reporter revealed the following information: Reporter stated the Weight Modification improvement project on their EMB-145LR involved beefing up certain areas of the fuselage by installing different type rivets and larger; or heavier; clips that attach the fuselage skin to the frames and stringers. The work was driven by a Service Bulletin from Embraer that was formatted by his carrier's Engineering into an Engineering Order. The Engineering Order documents the specific areas of rework and necessary signoffs including inspection requirements. A general signoff by the Lead would verify the paperwork for each area was completed. Reporter stated that as a Lead Mechanic; he doubts he actually installed any of the rivets; but could very easily have signed off for the paperwork completion.
