Synopsis

HCF Ground Controller described event when failed internal coordination led to use of closed taxiway.

Narrative

I was working Ground Control; Clearance Delivery; and Flight Data combined. I had received a briefing from the previous Controller and assumed the position at XA50L. At XB00L Taxiway A was scheduled to close; but there had been no confirmation by the previous Controller or the Supervisor. At XB00L the Supervisor gave his relief briefing to a CIC and left the facility. Nothing was said to the remaining Controller either confirming or announcing the closure. None of the Controllers were aware that it had closed. I taxied the 3 aircraft on the 'closed' taxiway before the airport authority called to confirm the taxiway closure. This could have been avoided had the Supervisor announced or verified the actual closure. Even though closures are scheduled; in advance; they often are delayed or canceled for various reasons. It should not be assumed that since it has been posted in advance; that everyone is aware. There are many duties that distract -- and closures need to be verified and announced in real-time!

Frequently asked questions

How do I search flights by aircraft type on FlightFinder?

Pick an aircraft model — Boeing 737, Airbus A320, A380, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and more — enter your origin airport, and FlightFinder shows every route that plane flies from there with live fares.

Which aircraft types can I filter by?

We support Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787, the full Airbus A220/A319/A320/A321/A330/A340/A350/A380 family, Embraer E170/E175/E190/E195, Bombardier CRJ and Dash 8, and the ATR 42/72 turboprops.

Where does the route data come from?

Live schedules come from Amadeus, AeroDataBox and Travelpayouts. Observed routes (which aircraft actually flew a given city pair) are crowdsourced from adsb.lol ADS-B data under the Open Database License.
