Synopsis

FLT CREW MEMBER FLEW A REVENUE TRIP AFTER HIS ACFT QUALIFICATION HAD LAPSED.

Narrative

I FLEW A REVENUE PAX FLT W/O MEETING RECENT EXPERIENCE (FAR 121.439). I WAS TRAINED AS A CAPT ON LGT ACFT IN NOV AND PART OF DEC; 1987. BEFORE AND AFTER THIS TRNING I HAD BEEN FLYING AS A F/O ON WDB. SINCE I FINISHED MY TRNING I HAVE FLOWN WDBS AS AN F/O. TWO WKS BEFORE THIS OCCURRENCE I WAS ADVISED THAT I WAS BEING SENT TO NEWARK FROM HONOLULU (WHICH WAS MY BASE) AND WAS BEING ASSIGNED A CAPT POS ON THE LGT. I WAS VERY OCCUPIED WITH STUDYING THE LGT MANUALS AND MAKING MYSELF CURRENT KNOWLEDGE-WISE SO I COULD MOVE INTO THE NEW POS. I NEEDED 25 HRS OF INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE AND AN FAA FLT CHK BEFORE BEING RELEASED ON MY OWN. THE CHK CAPT ON MY FLT SAID; ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T HAVE THE 3 TKOFS AND LNDGS AS REQUIRED BY FAR 121.439; IT WAS OK AS HE WAS A CHK AIRMAN. THE NEXT MORNING I WAS INFORMED BY THE ASSISTANT CHIEF PLT THAT HE HAD BEEN WRONG IN INFORMING THE CHK AIRMAN THAT IT WAS A LEGAL FLT. AS SOON AS THE CORRECT DATA WAS FOUND I WENT INTO THE SIMULATOR WITH A QUALIFIED CHK AIRMAN AND COMPLIED FULLY WITH FAR 121.439. MY APPREHENSION AND STUDYING FLT MANUALS TO PREPARE FOR MY IOE AND FAA CHK ALLOWED ME TO HAVE MY GUARD DOWN ON THIS FAR 121.439. I WAS FURTHER LED ASTRAY BY NOT LOOKING UP THE FAR ON RECENT EXPERIENCE FOR MYSELF WHEN THE CHK AIRMAN FIRST BROUGHT IT UP. AS AN UPCOMING CAPT; I SHOULD HAVE KEPT MYSELF MORE INFORMED. I FEEL THAT TRNING SHOULD BE DONE AND COMPLETED IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO GOING INTO THAT POS; NOT SPLIT UP WITH A 4 MONTH INTERVAL AFTER FLYING A MUCH LARGER AND DIFFERENT ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 85048: THERE SHOULD BE A WAY IN THE SYS; WHEN THERE ARE NO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES; TO ADMIT TO THE FAA THAT YOU GOOFED; GET YOUR FINGERS SLAPPED; WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN AND PRESS ON. BUT; THE ADVERSARY SITUATION CONTINUES.
