2009-10 · NASA ASRS report 856127
Distracted by ancillary duties; the Captain of an ATR72 which diverted due to a shattered windshield forgot to enter the discrepancy in the AML prior to leaving the airport via ground transportation.
After diverting to a suitable airport with a shattered windshield I was very busy checking on my crew; contacting Dispatch; Operations Control and my Supervisor to make sure everyone knew what was going on. During this time I was interrupted by a passenger; an agent; flight attendants; contract maintenance; etc. Then airport ground crew wanted us to move the airplane. When we went out there we encountered a camera crew who was taking pictures of the airplane and had to get the Station Manager involved to get rid of them. We moved the airplane and were then told they were holding the bus with our passengers waiting for us to return to our departure airport. In my hurry to not further delay our passengers I forgot to write the discrepancy in the aircraft logbook. I remembered when we got back to base and contacted my Supervisor. I thought it would be an easy process to fix; but found out it was not. Suggestions: Find a better place to talk on phone with Dispatch. Slow down; take time to make sure all items are taken care of before leaving. Delegate more tasks to First Officer or ground crew.
