2009-10 · NASA ASRS report 858601
MD80 Flight Crew experiences right hydraulic system oil quantity loss during slat extension. An emergency is declared; the gear extended manually; and a safe landing at destination ensues.
Captain was flying; I was the pilot monitoring. We were on the arrival; and had just extended slats and then turned downwind. We were cleared to descend to 6000 FT and were told to expect a visual to Runway XXL. Shortly after starting our descent to 6000 FT we got a master caution light and a R HYD PRESS LOW caution light. The right hydraulic pressure gauge indicated between 0 PSI and about 2500 PSI as the needle jumped up and down. I looked at the right hydraulic quantity and it was at 0. Shortly thereafter; the right hydraulic pressure was to 0 and stayed at 0. The master caution light illuminated again along with a RUDDER CONTROL MANUAL caution light. We asked Approach for an extended downwind and declared and emergency; stating that we would have to remain on the runway after landing. Captain continued to fly and I ran the L/R or both hydraulic quantity loss abnormal checklist. We executed the checklist including emergency gear extension and were cleared to land on Runway XXR since Tower preferred to keep Runway XXL open. Landing was uneventful with a smooth touchdown. We stopped on the runway. ARFF met the aircraft; saw no hazards other than our gear doors were down and the right reverser was not stowed (at this point we also had a REVERSER ACCUMULATOR LOW caution light). We later discovered that the skid on the left gear ripped off on landing; thus damaging that gear door. Maintenance then pinned the gear; stowed the gear doors; and a ramp crew towed us to the gate.
We slowed to 210 KTS and extended the slats. We noticed the R Hydraulic Pressure low light and fluctuating pressure followed by the Rudder Control Manual light and lose of all quantity in the right hydraulic system. Ran the HYD L/R or both Hydraulic Quantity Loss checklist; and declared an emergency; notified the flight attendants; made a PA; manually extended the gear and landed on Runway XXR. Touchdown was smooth; decelerated normally and stopped straight ahead. Both thrust reverser's worked; but the right one stayed partially extended. Brakes worked normally; rudder pedal steered was affected a little. Fire rescue checked aircraft out and maintenance pinned and towed us in. Damage to aircraft: left gear door skid separated from the door and damage to the door requires replacement.
