2010-02 · NASA ASRS report 871983
D10 Controller described a go around event from Runway 31R that resulted in a potential conflict with a Runway 31L departure; the reporter indicating the existing go around procedure needs revision.
I was working the Dallas North Satellite position when I noticed the data tag for Air Carrier X; an MD80 flashing at me. Since Air Carrier X was on final for Runway 31R at DFW this would indicate to me that Air Carrier X was going around. Then Local East 3 got in my ear via the landline and was handing Air Carrier X off to me when he suddenly stopped for a few seconds as he realized how close the Air Carrier X was getting to Air Carrier Y a E145 departing off of Runway 35L. Air Carrier X missed approach was via our procedures but still the two aircraft got extremely close to each other. I heard later that the pilot of Air Carrier Y even commented that it's a little close; and veered to the West away from the Air Carrier X. This was an unsafe situation! Recommendation; the reason I filled out this report was because of how close the two aircraft got to each other. Just because the procedure worked this time; doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. The aircraft were really close together!
