Synopsis

SMT BRAKE CATCHES FIRE DURING TKOF AND SUBSEQUENT ABORT ROLL.

Narrative

I WAS #1 FOR TKOF HOLDING AT RWY 1L. TWR ADVISED LONG WAIT FOR HVY JET TFC OFF RWY 1R. I SET PARKING BRAKE; THEN ATC CLRED ME FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF SINGLE ON 1 MI FINAL. I DID BEFORE TKOF CHK TRANSPONDER ON; LIGHTS ON; FUEL PUMPS ON HIGH; PARKING BRAKE WENT IN TO STOPS; TANKS ON MAIN AND FLAPS UP. I THEN TAXIED INTO POS ON RWY 1L AND SET THROTTLES TO 20' OF MP; BROUGHT MIXTURES TO RICH; THROTTLES TO 25' MP; CHKED GAUGES IN GREEN AND APPLIED FULL PWR. I NOTICED STIFFNESS IN RUDDERS AND SLOW ACCELERATION AND AIRSPD SLOW THROUGH 60 KTS CHK GAUGES STILL IN GREEN AIRSPD WAS THROUGH 75 KTS. I ABORTED TKOF AND APPLIED BRAKES. I WENT OFF RWY 1L AND CAME TO STOP BTWN RWYS 1L AND 1R ON THE ACCESS ROAD. I GOT OUT TO LET PAX OFF WHEN I SAW RIGHT BRAKE ON FIRE. I THEN WENT BACK INSIDE TO GET FIRE EXTINGUISHER; BUT A LINEMAN FOR FBO PUT THE FIRE OUT. I THEN UNLOADED PAX. NO ONE WAS INJURED. BY THEN METRO POLICE AND FIRE TRUCKS ARRIVED. ACFT WAS THEN TOWED TO MAINT HANGARS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: THE FAA IS INVESTIGATING THIS INCIDENT. NO DAMAGE TO ACFT OR INJURIES; THEREFORE FAA CALLS IT AN INCIDENT. FAA SUSPECTS THAT THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT RELEASED OR NOT RELEASED PROPERLY. FAA SAID HE CAN'T PROVE BRAKE WAS NOT RELEASED NOR CAN THE RPTR PROVE HE HAD RELEASED THE BRAKE. RPTR WAS AMAZED AT HOW FAR HE TRAVELED BEFORE THE ACFT CAME TO A FULL STOP. HE SAID THAT IT WAS AS IF THERE WERE NO BRAKES AT ALL. AFTER ABORT; ACFT APCHED END OF RWY; THEN TURNED OFF RWY ONTO AN ACCESS ROAD.
