2010-04 · NASA ASRS report 882805
An AV8B Pilot reported a runway incursion after he landed as quickly as possible on the nearest runway. The aircraft developed a flight control anomaly peculiar to this aircraft type that can result in an extreme sideslip and inverted flight.
I was the lead aircraft of a flight of two on an approach turn (base) to Runway XXL. During the approach turn at approximately the 90 position; my aircraft experienced possible flight control malfunctions indicative of an extreme sideslip situation. The AV8B tends to depart controlled flight and flip upside down with extreme sideslip. In order to further evaluate the situation; I began an inside the cockpit scan to cross reference secondary instruments. After confirming the malfunction I transitioned back outside the cockpit. By this time I had drifted to a position slightly left of center line for Runway XXC about 500 feet past the approach end and at 150 ft AGL. Although cleared to land Runway XXL; I landed on Runway XXC. Given the regime of flight there was insufficient time to talk to Tower/declare an emergency. No other aircraft were on approach to or taking off from Runway XXC. I did not wave off the approach due to the possible flight control malfunction as well as fuel state.
