A B757-200 RECIRC FAN failed in flight causing the WXR FAIL; FLT DK EQP SMKE EICAS messages. An emergency was declared and the flight continued to its nearby destination. A map shift and loss of EADI color may be related to this issue.
While in cruise we received a WXR FAIL (weather radar failure) message on the radar. Shortly thereafter there was a faint and very brief smell of smoke accompanied by FLT DK EQP SMKE and L RECIRC FAN messages. This was followed in about a minute by EQPT OVHT message. EADIs (Electronic Attitude Display Indicators) lost color. All checklists were followed to the extent possible. We could not select ALT FAN for EQPT OVHT because the FLT DK EQP SMKE message did not extinguish. We then notified Operations. We turned off both radar switches thinking the radar failure probably started the chain of events. We declared an emergency and kept our speed fast until in a position to make a safe landing. Estimate time in flight with messages at 20 minutes before landing. Landing was uneventful. We did have a map shift and not sure that was related to component failure but other than that (and the color loss on the EADI) all normal flight instruments fully operational all the way to the gate. We quickly removed power from the airplane at the gate and discussed the events with the Mechanic.
