Synopsis

TOO HIGH ALT WHEN CLEARED FOR ILS APCH.

Narrative

AT 4000' (1200' ABOVE FAF) AGL AND 2 NM SW OF OM GSO APCH CLRED ME FOR THE APCH AFTER CAPTURE OF THE LOC. I HAD TO MAKE AN UNNECESSARILY STEEP DSCNT TO COMPLETE THE APCH. I NOTICED THE NEXT ACFT TO LAND AFTER ME; AN SMA ALSO WAS VERY HIGH OVER THE THRESHOLD; AND SEEMED TO BE MAKING A VERY STEEP DSCNT. THE INCIDENT CALLED TO MIND MY LAST PREVIOUS APCH TO GSO (I BELIEVE IT WAS TUE; APRIL 1988; AM); WHEN APCH LOST ME AND NEGLECTED TO TURN ME OVER TO TWR DESPITE REPEATED REQUESTS BY ME. I THINK THERE IS INADEQUATE OR IMPROPER SUPERVISION AND/OR TRAINING OF ATC PERSONNEL AT GSO; AT LEAST COMPARED TO OTHER APCH FACS INTO WHICH I FLY REGULARLY. (ORL; DAB; DCA; CHS; CRE) I RECOMMEND A REVIEW. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED FOLLOWING INFO. CALLBACK REVEALS RPTR SO UPSET AT TIME OF INCIDENT HE FELT IT PRUDENT NOT TO TALK TO ATC. ESPECIALLY DISTRESSED WHEN HE SAW NEXT ACFT TO ARRIVE HAVE TO MAKE SAME STEEP DSCNT. NOW FEELS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEST TO SPEAK TO ATC IN PERSON AT TIME OF INCIDENT. SAYS REALLY NOT EAGER TO MAKE ANOTHER IFR APCH AT GSO; BUT BUSINESS MAKES TRIPS FROM FL TO MD FREQUENTLY.
