2010-07 · NASA ASRS report 901277
A multi-engine BK MBB-117 C2 helicopter pilot made an emergency landing at a nearby airport after experiencing an engine failure shortly after takeoff.
We departed the hospital pad with the torques matched on both engines to a hover at 50 FT; then accelerated forward into a flight mode. About a half mile south of the hospital pad; at 500 AGL and around 50 KTS the #1 engine started to rollback and I established an OEI [One Engine Inoperative] flight mode and adjusted the collective to maintain single engine operations. The #2 engine increased automatically as it is programmed to do; and I established a low gradient climb to clear the obstacles and added forward cyclic to increase the forward airspeed. At this point I elected to go to the nearest airport and execute a run-on landing with one engine at idle and the other at fly. After establishing a long shallow approach I elected to complete the run-on to the parallel taxiway so as not to shutdown the commuter aerodrome after landing. On final at about 1-2 miles out the fuel pressure light on the #1 engine flickered on and off several times during the approach. A call on CTAF frequency was made advising we were making a precautionary landing and we executed the landing without incident. At this point we informed the Company and Maintenance of our location and situation.
