Synopsis

LGT ACR WING TIP HIT TRUCK DURING TAXI.

Narrative

I WAS THE COPLT OF ACR X. WE PUSHED DEEP INTO RAMP AREA. I CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC AND WAS ADVISED TO 'TAXI 29 LEFT.' WE HAD BEEN PUSHED AND WERE FACING EASTERLY AT TIME OF CALL TO GND. THERE WAS CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS ON THE PARALLEL TXWY ADJACENT TO 29L. THE CONSTRUCTION WAS ROUGHLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TXWY AND EXTENDED BTWN TXWYS A-6 AND A-5. TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITIES AS A CREW; WE DETERMINED THAT TAXIING VIA THE NORTH SIDE OF THE CONSTRUCTION AREA WAS ACCEPTABLE AND SAFE. THERE WERE NO NOTAMS; ATIS INFO OR GND MARKINGS INDICATING THAT THIS WAS A CLOSED AREA. ON TAXIING THROUGH THE AREA WE FELT A SLIGHT BUMP SIMILAR TO A POTHOLE OR UNEVENNESS IN THE TXWY. SHORTLY THEREAFTER A F/A CALLED UP AND SAID A PAX HAD SEEN OUR WINGTIP STRIKE A VEHICLE NEAR THE TUNNEL. WE STOPPED AND BEGAN OUR NORMAL PROCS INCLUDING CALLING FOR EMER VEHICLES. NEAR THIS TIME THE GND CTLR ADVISED US THAT IN THE FUTURE; THAT AREA WAS NOT TO BE USED FOR TAXI. WE WERE PULLED INTO THE GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THIS EPISODE COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED WITH CLR MARKINGS IN EITHER SIGN OR GND MARKINGS FORM INDICATING A RESTR TXWY. IN ADDITION; WITH THE DISRUPTION OF THE CONSTRUCTION AREA ALREADY PRESENT; IT MAY NOT BE DESIRABLE TO HAVE GND SVC VEHICLES PARKED IN CLOSE PROX TO PUSHING AND TAXIING ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 90675. THE LEAD F/A INFORMED ME BY INTERPHONE THAT A PAX HAD OBSERVED US STRIKE A TRUCK WITH THE LEFT WING TIP AND THAT FUEL WAS SPILLING OUT OF THE WING. WE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT; SECURED THE ENGS; CONTACTED GND FOR NECESSARY SUPPORT EQUIPMENT; AND PERFORMED ALL SECURING ACFT CHKLISTS AND REMOVED ELECTRICAL PWR FROM THE ACFT. I WENT TO THE AFT GALLEY SVC DOOR AND OBSERVED TO BE WHAT WAS A MINOR FUEL DRIP FROM THE LEFT WING TIP AREA AND DETERMINED THAT NO IMMINENT DANGER WAS INDICATED TO THE ACFT OR PAXS. I RELAYED THIS INFO TO THE CAPT AND WE WERE TOWED IN TO GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
