An RJ First Officer reported receiving an EGPWS warning on a visual approach to AVL.
We were flying a right downwind to land on Runway 16 in AVL. Weather was VMC 8SM; SKC; winds 170/7G17. The visual approach was briefed and flown according to SOP. Due to some of the rising terrain features around AVL the EGPWS produced a terrain advisory. We were descending while turning right base for Runway 16 when the warning was received. The Captain increased power and pitch to comply with the warning; [climbed] approximately 200 FT; which cleared the warning. We extended our downwind due to our close lateral proximity with the runway; executed a turn to final; and landed [from] a stabilized visual approach without incident. The EGPWS alert lasted for approximately 5 seconds. Captain was Pilot Flying; I was the Pilot Not Flying. The EGPWS terrain advisory was produced due to the close proximity of the lower level terrain to the west of AVL. The advisory was complied with quickly; smoothly; and with excellent crew communication. Flying a left downwind when approaching AVL from the southwest of the field would help prevent this situation in the future.
