GA LTT HELICOPTER UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE. ATA CTZ AND UNAUTH LNDG.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING A HELI FROM A FIELD SITE 30 MI E OF MONTPELIER; VT; TO A FIELD SITE IN ATTLEBORO; MA (137 NM). A STRAIGHT LINE COURSE WOULD TAKE US ABOUT 10 MI W OF HANSCOM FIELD IN BEDFORD; MA. WE KNEW THE WX WAS OK AT OUR DEST WHEN WE DEPARTED. AS THE FLT PROGRESSED; WE ENCOUNTERED HEADWINDS; WHICH PUT US CLOSER TO DUSK; AND THE WX DETERIORATED. WHEN WE WERE ABOUT 25 MI FROM OUR DEST; WE USED THE SEARCH MODE ON OUR LORAN TO FIND A PLACE TO LAND. THE NAME 'BED' CAME UP 7.2 MI AND A HDG OF 32 DEG. WE DECIDED TO GO THERE. AT THIS POINT; MY COPLT COULD NOT FIND A TWR FREQ ON THE CHART; AS NONE WAS PRINTED ON IT. HE THEN FOUND ONE IN THE FLT GUIDE UNDER NORTH BEDFORD. WE CALLED ON 118.1 AND GOT NO ANSWER. SO; WE FLEW TO THE ARPT THINKING IT WAS AN UNCTLED ARPT OR THE TWR WAS CLOSED. UPON OUR ARR AT THE ARPT; I FLASHED MY LNDG LIGHT AT THE TWR AND GOT NO RESPONSE. WE THEN LANDED ON THE RAMP. I THEN TRIED THE 2 POPULAR GND FREQS AND GOT AN ANSWER ON 121.7. WE WERE THEN INFORMED THAT WE HAD ENTERED AN IFR CTL ZONE W/O PERMISSION. WE HAD LANDED AT HANSCOM FIELD; BEDFORD; MA. I FEEL THAT THE TWR FREQ SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE CHART; AS WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THIS ARPT HAD NO TWR. I ALSO FEEL ALL LORANS WITH A SEARCH MODE SHOULD HAVE THE TWR FREQ DISPLAYED WHEN THEY COME UP. THE CHART WAS THE NY SEC 37TH EDITION; JUNE 2; 1988; EXP DEC 15; 1988.
